Forums - Gaming Discussion - What is so good about Turn-based battle system? (FF XV)

Tagged games:

I hate turn based games. They feel cheap and fake. I thought FF XV will have turn based elements. Now I am interested in this game again. Thanks.

There's more strategy in turn-based combat to me. Most of it comes from the fact that you control your whole party not just the leader.

Perhaps, Final Fantasy XV will be able to inject some strategy in the action RPG genere but my frame of reference is Kingdom Hearts which I did like a lot but the combat was very simple and repetitive.

Signature goes here!

it allows your game to have 100% CPU load for everything else because nothing has to think (thats why it was invented in the first place because archaic gaming devices were slow and crappy)

After thinking about it I guess Turn Based doesn't have that many pros. One of the biggest reasons why I like it is probably because some of my all time favorites were Turn Based. So nostalgia might have something to do with it. It's also nice to be able to relax and think about your next move without being pressured to pick a move fast.

don't really care what combat it has, as long as the characters and story is good

I think the biggest concern I have for FFXV is that a majority of the game will be linear and scripted. Here's hoping for some open world stuff where i'm not confined to a city path and what not to use the action battle system.

Real-time is the evolution of the battle system. The percentages are taken based on actual damage taken. Dungeons & Dragons is a strategy dice based RPG of which these games evolved from so turn based games essentially they were the personification of how a D&D dice roll round would go.

World map and huge areas are already confirmed in FF XV by Nomura.

HUH?! No you're not! Thread fail!

Jealous much ? :p

Both types of gameplay have their place and should stay alive. It is shame that turn-based is dying right now (and in a way transitioning more to handhelds/smart phones/tablets)

Since FF X, the Final Fantasy brand just has not felt the same. FFXII, while a good game, just did not have that same feeling to it. With the loss of the Turn-based feel, FFXII and FFXIII seemed to have lost more to me. They seemed to have lost their FF soul. Dont get me wrong, I played both of them (even have the Plat in FFXIII) and really enjoyed them, they just were not the same to me.

This is not to say that Action RPGs do not have their place. Grandia, Star Ocean, Kingdom Hearts, Tales of + many others are awesome games. I love some of the series to death and hope they stay the same as they have been. Could you imagine a Grandia Turn-Based RPG? How about Tales of? It just wouldnt feel right.

I am liking everything I have seen so far on XV, except for the name. It should stay apart (same with the MMOs) as it will never feel like a Final Fantasty Mainline game. At least not to me.
