Forums - Sales Discussion - Are VGC Devil May Cry 3 sales really far off ?

This is what VGC says

1 Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening Special Edition PS2 2006 Action Capcom  2.21
2 Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening PS2 2005 Action Capcom 2.09

http://www.vgchartz.com/gamedb/?name=Devil+May+Cry+3

This is what capcom says

44    2005/2    Devil May Cry 3    PS2    1,3

http://www.capcom.co.jp/ir/english/business/million.html

Am I reading something in the wrong light ?

It certainly seems VGChartz is wrong there.

I was suspicious that the special edition sold 2 million units as well. When does that ever happen?

It's 1.3 m (capcom) against ~4 m (vgchartz)

I meant I was certain the special edition numbers were wrong even before we saw Capcom's numbers.

I'm gonna guess the combined sales of DMC3 and DMC3 Special Edition are around 2 million units sold. I don't think Capcom is combining the sales of those two in that list.

I don't see why I'd believe VGC's numbers over capcoms, particularly when capcoms saying they sold less, and VGC's numbers also don't make sense, having a re-release matching the sales of the original.

It also could have sold more than 1.3 million from capcoms numbers. If the special edition wasn't counted, if the sales were under a million it wouldn't appear on that list.

but idk.

VGC could be wrong, but Capcom is also a bit weird about how they count SKUs on their million sellers lists.  I remember looking at old financial reports before DMC4 came out, and their DMC series sales were higher than 1/2/3 combined.

As of March 31, 2007 the series was at 6.9 million.  6 years later Capcom only shows 5.16 million for 1/2/3.  By next year (2008, 2 months after DMC4) it was at 9.5 million, but today 1/2/3/4 are at 7.86 million.

to tell you guys the truth I think VGchartz saes numbers of DMC are more right than capcoms. I mean look at resident evil. Capcom said the series sold over 50 million copies when RE6 came out. And now its over 55 million copies because of RE6 and RE5, RE ORC and Revelations also still sold alot together. Capcoms says that RE5 only sold 5.8 million copies but VHchartz says it's over 8.21 million. The series would never sold over 50 million if RE5 sales were only 5.8M so I think they undertrack there own sales.
