Forums - Microsoft - Unity enters deal with Microsoft for Xbox One, W8 platform support

VG247

Unity Technologies announced today during Build Conference in San Francisco that it has added Xbox One support for Kinect, SmartGlass support to its development tools and has also extended its commitment to Windows 8 the W8 Phone. The Xbox One version of the game engine will also feature cloud computing support, and developers being published by Microsoft Studios will be able to use Unity free. The firm will release the commercial version of its Store Add-on for Windows later this summer, and it will also be waiving the $1,500 license fee for licensed Unity Pro 4 developers as part of its Microsoft deal. Thanks, GI International.

What is unity?

A game engine.

I guess indie developers will be able to use it for free when putting games on MS platforms. Could be interesting.

Sweet. That means there will be a lot of cross development for Xbone and Wii U.

Well, expected. Unity is available for almost every platform out there.

I can't wait for Blow or Fish to moan that giving a free engine is bad for indies as it discourages independent engine development and will lead to lazy programming.

This screams for Xbone/WiiU cross-dev. Nice.

Unity is all platforms, and no it wont be free to use :( They have a free to use license that is so restrictive you wouldnt release a game under it, unless it wasnt for profit.

There are lots of great games made with Unity. It announced deals with Linux/Steambox/WiiU and just about everybody. For the record this is how a game engine developer should behave, make it run on everything.

Oh Golly, Superchunk and Walsufir finally meet together!  (Prepares for epic Cartman Battle!)

It's pretty amazing, they have unified Windows 8, Windows Phone 8 and the Xbox One for easy porting.  Makes me wonder if the next versions will not be Windows 9, but Windows One.

And I thought it was big when they announced Windows for ARM.

Really not sure I see any point of Consol over PC's since Kinect, Wii and other alternative ways to play have been abandoned.

Top 50 'most fun' game list coming soon!

Tell me a funny joke!
