""Every generation, as you've probably heard, has grown approximately 30%," he said. "So this generation is about 300 million units. Most industry experts think the next generation will get upwards of about 400 million units. That's if it's a game console, over the next decade."

Do people actually read only thread-titles?

Do people actually read only half of the OP?

"(...) Medhi thinks the general entertainment capabilities of Xbox One and PS4 will more than double their selling power. "We think you can go broader than a game console, that's our aim, and you can go from 400 million to potentially upwards of a billion units. That's how we're thinking of the Xbox opportunity as we go forward."

Yes, the Xbox One is getting a major portion of one billion of the entire generation. That's what they are talking about before this sentence. Of course they don't expect to sell them on their own because this wouldn't be a logical conclusion with what they said before.

So Microsoft is aiming for 1 billion next gen consoles (PS4 + Xbox One + Wii U), which is what the thread title says.

Exactly. Well, they are not aiming for really, this is their prediction. They are most probably aiming to be a major part of it :)

I really, really doubt the sales of the Xbox One, PS4. And Wii U will total 1 billion. I actually think that the market will shrink.

I know what will happen! Microsoft will announce Xbox 360 super slim and the price cut! :D

I don't think anyone has suggested the 1bn is just for MS. We know they're talking about the whole industry. It's still lolworthy.

Why lolworthy? Ah yes, MS did this comment, this has to be a lol, right? They are even telling you why they expect that the whole market will grow. If they are wrong, ok. Then the conclusion was wrong but I can't see why it's lolworthy to conclude a growth - it would only be an advantage if the market grows even stronger.

A 150% growth from 400Mil to 1Bil? That IS lolworthy, no matter who claims it...

They are expecting a 233% growth from 300M this gen to 1B instead of the 30% growth of previous gens.

Personally I think no. Most of the growth this past cycle came almost entirely from Nintendo. And that audience moved on to smartphones and don't want to pay even $5 for a game. Why should they? Those $1 games keep their attention for a while and then there are 1000 others waiting once they tired of that one.

This generation will see a contraction over 5 years IMO.

PS2 + XBox = 175 million sold approx.

PS3 + 360 = 140 million sold approx.

To me this doesn't show a lot of growth outside when looking at non-Nintendo platforms.

Good point. I don't see many casual Wii owners moving to either PS4 or X1, though little kids growing up with the Wii who now want more hardcore experiences will.

Perhaps, yes. They expect the market to grow very strong and at least they are putting also hopes in this which generally it's a good sign to say so. I doubt they expect it in their financial plans, though. It is more like "this could happen", therefore using "potential". Projected sales year by year will of course be different.

I really don't know what to say.... let's hope....

Switch!!!

I can understand 100 million units of the 360 but 1 billion units of the Xbox One and PS4 is impossible.

Really, good luck with that. This is the first generation of video games that'll have to deal with a bad macro-economic environment in consolidated markets, and depending on how that DRM/used game policy truly works, it might be even harder.

On the other hand, I heard gaming is growing quite well in emerging markets.
