Sony cuts 07/08 PlayStation 3 sales target to 9.5 mln

TOKYO, Jan 31 (Reuters) - Japan's Sony Corp (6758.T: Quote, Profile, Research) on Thursday said it had cut its PlayStation 3 sales target for the year to March to 9.5 million units from 11 million. Sony saw a slow start to the videogame consoles' sales after its launch in late 2006 due to its high price and scarcity of strong software titles.

On the other hand, Sony said it was raising its PlayStation Portable sales target for the current business year to 13 million units from 10 million.

Sony sold 4.9 million units of the PS3 in October-December. During the same period, rival Nintendo Co Ltd (7974.OS: Quote, Profile, Research) sold about 7 million units of the Wii. (Reporting by Kiyoshi Takenaka)

No VGChartz is just fine. Sony is saying they will ship 9.5m units in this fiscal year. Once you add the few million they shipped from launch day through March, i.e. last fiscal year, the numbers come out ok.

Personally I think they will have trouble reaching that, but, it is much closer to reality.

Theose 9.5 are for the current fiscal year only, VGchartz numbers are since launch

...unless you have no clue, it would seem.

That's 9.5 million shipped THIS fiscal year, not total shipments since production began...

That means they predict to have sold (shipped) 12,7 million consoles march 31th, right? Let's say 10% of that will be stock, so they must sell 11,4 million consoles end of march.

Hmm, I think they will be 0,5m - 1m short, but who knows, it's possible. If they don't reach it, it will hurt extra though.

Stockholders won't be happy either way, that's for sure.
