Forums - Microsoft - Microsoft’s Engineers On Xbox One: “We Purposefully Did Not Target The Highest End Graphics.”

From a rather massive article on Engadget, showcasing the making of Microsoft’s newly announced Xbox One, comes a most interesting snippet – that Microsoft purposefully didn’t target the “highest end graphics” when building the console.

It’s in the video, so you’ll have to sit through a 20 second Windows 8 advert before you can skip to the bit (about 5:40), but it’s there. “We purposefully did not target the highest end graphics. We targeted it more as a broad entertainment player.”

Picked up by GAF, it’s a strange claim to make in a promotional piece, and whilst that way of thinking worked for Nintendo with the original Wii, up against the way Sony are marketing the PS4 as a real powerhouse it’s a baffling quote.

Note that nobody’s claiming that the PS4 is technically better, just the choice of words.

No doubt the console is capable of great things – visually too – but from what we’ve seen today (and echoed around the internet) perhaps Microsoft’s new console is going to have to flex its muscles a little harder than some thought before the conference kicked off.

We’ll know come E3, when we’ll get chance to test the games first hand.

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

hummm right -

arrogance is the key world

Yeah, I'm not even sure what that means. I mean its a cutting edge console.

The only benefit of not going for the highest end graphics is keeping the price low.

As a hardcore gamer, I demand moar graphics.

You know, what is hardcore? I saw some dude at IGN saying "hardcore gamers want C.O.D."

I don´t get it, to me FPSs are as casual as it gets.

Here in Brazil, when a person is NOT a gamer and buy a console, they get always the same three games: FIFA, UFC and CALL OF DUTY. Then they play like 100 hours of each through 2 or 3 years, and never buy another game again...

On topic: I still think the WIIU is in trouble now, PS4 and XBO seems pretty high end to me...

My grammar errors are justified by the fact that I am a brazilian living in Brazil. I am also very stupid.

Technology wise I do think Xbox One holds this crown safely.

But Graphics wise, its quite safe to say Ps4 has this down on the ground,

Yay!!!

You again?

I agree with the FPS thing to a degree. Some fps games, generally older ones catered to the skilled. Now with CoD and it's success, everyone wants a slice of that pie. CoD is nearly as casual as the Kinect in my eyes.

Technology? The Xbox ONE seems to blow the PS4 out of the water. PS4 though, is more game oriented and will have the better graphics like last gen with ps360.

To America, yes, but to me most of the TV stuff is amazing, but useless here in Brazil. In terms of stuff I do care about, games and apps like the Netflix, I guess they will fight head to head again. I do not agree with the people that said the reveal was a disaster, the console do appear to be awesome.

However, I got to be honest, the PS4 still is pretty exciting to me, and, how we said before, there still some stuff to reveal at E3.

Let us see what happens.
