They stopped tracking it about two years ago, and tracked it very poorly before that.  From a post I found that I made in 2011, PS2 sales were 3.7 million lower than shipments from the start of 2009 to March 2011.

I believe his issue is there used to be PS2 data, both hardware and software in the weekly charts.  This was removed sometime in the last year or two.  Of course the hardware numbers were so inaccurate we didn't really lose much there.

It was removed because VGC moved on to tracking just the new generation. (My guess.)

honestly this is a great and much needed thread. great job man

This type of thread comes out monthly. But is still nice to remind ioi from time to time. He will still come in and give us a good reason for why it is not happening. Others will blame gamewise.co and others will say digital is the future.

I hope the DS/PS2 gap is not that much.....

Not that this is what the thread is about, but it is.  Given that the PS3 was down YOY for FY2012, the smallest the gap can be is 4.03M.  But, hey, look at it this way, they are both beasts.  And it's probably going to be awhile before we have another console pass 150M+.

VGC had been tracking the new generation for more than half a decade at that point.  It also wouldn't be a reason to remove the old data.  Japan has data going back to the 80's and the PS2 numbers were still wiped there as well.

I can't remember exactly when the data was removed, but I do remember a VGC writer publishing an article claiming the DS had outsold the PS2 based on the inaccurate VGC numbers.  I don't know if that was the reason, but the situation didn't exactly help the veracity of VGC numbers.  Of course there are still numbers in the platform totals, though they need updating again.  So who knows really.

It must've been taken away because it wasn't needed anymore, then. Although, I don't get why it was taken away from the old archives, that doesn't make sense.

Since this seems to be the current go-to place for errors with tracking, I'll add some of the ones I've been pushing since January to see if anything happens here (can't hurt!)

Angry Birds 3DS undertracked:

According to NPD numbers for 2012 it sold between 400k & 500k in the USA LTD.  We have it at 200k.  Undertracked by at least 200k.

Mario & Sonic 3DS undertracked:

According to NPD numbers for 2012 it sold between 200k & 300k in the USA LTD.  We have it at 126k.  Undertracked by at least 74k.

Kingdom Hearts 3DS overtracked:

According to NPD numbers for 2012 it sold between 300k & 400k in the USA LTD.  We have it at 500k.  Overtracked by at least 100k.

LEGO Star Wars 3DS overtracked:

According to NPD numbers for 2012 it sold between 300k & 400k in the USA LTD.  We have it at 420k.  Overtracked by at least 20k.

Luigi's Mansion 3DS overtracked:

According to NPD numbers for March it sold 365k up to April 6th.  We have it at 451k.  Overtracked by around 86k.

Fire Emblem 3DS overtracked:

According to NPD numbers for February it sold 117k up to March 2nd.  We have it at 163k.  Overtracked by around 46k.

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon 3DS undertracked:

According to NPD numbers for March it sold 145k up to April 6th.  We have it at 131k.  undertracked by around 14k.

FIFA Vita tracking :

There are two FIFA games for Vita: FIFA Soccer and FIFA 13.  All the North American sales for the title have been added to the first version, even sales that FIFA 13 made.  Italo correctly spotted it 3 months ago yet FIFA 13 sales are still being added to FIFA Soccer.

Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 Plus tracking:

According to NPD numbers for February it sold 3k.  We have it at 0k.  Track this game please, ioi!

Dead or Alive 5 Plus tracking:

Also completely untracked in North America, though we didn't get any numbers for it in March's NPD.

God of War: Ascension undertracked:

According to NPD numbers for March it sold 633k up to April 6th.  We have it at 584k.  Undertracked by around 49k.

There's probably loads more that I could figure it, but it's 1AM and I'm tired, so maybe I'll add a few more tomorrow.

LBP VITA - I don't think the first week NA sales were ever added.

God Of War III - It's well over 5 million.

GT5, I believe aswell.

I don't like this. VGC should contain PS2 HW data, not only in the Platforms total. I want to talk with "ioi"

Putting away any personal feelings aside, PS2 no longer needs to be tracked. PS2 is almost two generations old now and VGC always moves on to the next generation and stops tracking old consoles once the new generation has totally taken hold. Something that's happened once and is about to happen again.

But the charts for 2007 and all the years before it (2006, 2005, 2004, etc) need the PS2 data to be complete, I mean, PS2 sold more than X360 and PS3 in 2007 so PS2 was still relevant that year, the same with 2006, 2005, etc.

To expand upon the PSP numbers, it averaged 22.3k in the first quarter of the year in Europe according to Nintendo.  Meanwhile VGC has been putting it at less than a thousand weekly.

According to...Nintendo?

Yes, they release sales data every quarter for all the systems.

Ah, didn't know that^^

They release the data they get from trackers. All of that number Yakuzaice is referencing is from Gfk who doesn't even track all of Europe, iirc.

Check out MyAnimeList and my Game Collection. Owner of the 5 millionth post.

Yeah, I do not really understand how this site which uses official sources does not actually use those official sources lol.

this site is about sales and mainly about the hardware.. so hy VGC would let it go off by so many is laughable. ioi will you respond?

*sigh* yea it's just becomming harder and harder to get any good information about sales in the videogame industry..

NPD stopped giving out numbers to the public a while ago; MS never announced software shippments and only referred to attachment rates at some times; then ofcourse there is the void of almost any info about digital sales; and Sony stopped listing shipments for their individual devices

*sigh* and the worst of all is that this didn't stop the bragging about which platform is more popular, no with the uncertainty in this matter rising the faith and vigor of the fanatics just increased (like in real religions I suppose)

atleast Nintendo is still feeding us with some facts, which unfortunately don't paint a complete picture though
