Forums - Sony Discussion - Sony forecast only 5 million Vita and PSP unit sales in FY14

The Vita was planned to be every bit as mainstream as the 3DS is, it's just that sales have not produced.  Sony cannot afford to support anything that loses money anymore.  If the Vita sales don't pick up, I agree that this will probably be their last handheld.  However, things can turn around, so who knows.  However, the 3DS currently has 6 1/2 times the market share that the Vita has and most of the Vita titles are not selling well at all.

Can you provide further details for this? The only sales comments I've seen regarding Vita games have been satisfaction with sales with several indie developers singing their praises inc confirming superior sales to PS3 versions of the same game (Retro City Rampage, Strangers Wrath HD). Compile Heart's game outselling it's 3DS counterparts substantially. Ubi Soft being happy with over half a million Assassins Creed sales. FIFA 13 outselling the 3DS and Wii U versions etc.

I'm not sure what part you want further details on.  Sony had originally forecasted sales of 16m Vitas to be sold last fiscal year.  They then dropped their forecast down to 12m then again down to 10m.  It ended up selling 4.5m (I bought 2)  I would consider them forecasting 16m units sold in it's 1st fiscal year a "mainstream device".  As for the software side of things, just look at the software charts on this site to see that most of the games have under performed.  PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale was suppose to be a heavy hitter, but has only sold 160,000 copies so far.  As for Assassins Creed, a large number of those were in the special bundles at Christmas time.  That's one of the systems I bought ($179 at Amazon w/free shipping), but I would not have bought the game otherwise.  As for Indy games, people who own Vita's are starving for some games, where as the PS3 and 3DS have far many more excellent choices available to them.

Stop hating and start playing.

Around the Network

Hardware sales yes but I didn't mention hardware in the bolded bit, you said "most Vita titles are not selling well at all" I provided confirmed cases where Vita version has outsold rivals and of developers expressing satisfaction of sales.

PSABR under-performed on PS3 as well so it's quite clear there wasn't the market for that title. How about my other examples? Please show me developers/publishers stating they were disappointed with how their Vita titles performed?

Retro City Rampage's developer is making new Vita games because his Vita port outsold every other console version of the game (even the PC ver if you base it on revenue).

Compile Heart were originally only making 1 title, have now decided to make further ones.

Sega have announced they are releasing 5 more Vita titles this year.

Guacamelee Vita outsold PS3 version by a considerable margin. Remember your "hard figures" on Vita don't include digital sales which are incredibly strong on Vita compared with other systems as a percentage of total software sales.

I just can't find any evidence whatsoever to back up your claim about Vita software sales. Remember it was UBISOFT not some random VGchartz forum poster who said they were satisfied with AC3: Liberation's sales. They have sold over 600,000 units, somehow I don't think Amazon's tally came anywhere near that with the black friday bundles.

EA's Vita titles selling better than their 3DS and Wii U counterparts. They're not indie games.

They might not be home console COD/Tomb Raider/GTA sales. But developers budget accordingly and are clearly making money out of their Vita software releases. It's looking pretty clear that Vita owners are a lot more active in their software purchasing though. I'd love to see proper software to hardware ratios.

I don't think Vita owners are starving for some games. There is far too much software for any serious gamer to keep up with. Maybe it's lacking the shovelware that other formats are flooded with. But you know, if it lets a hidden gem shine or a much smaller fish get some time in the limelight, I'm all for it.

RIP Dad 25/11/51 - 13/12/13. You will be missed but never forgotten.

This is actually lower then PS Vita/PSP sales of 2012. Guess no price cuts or system moving games are expected.
