Forums - Sales Discussion - THE PS2 remains the king!

PS1 and PS2 both lasted 12 years. PLaystation consoles have a 12+ year life plan confirmed. In 5 years time the PS3 will enter its 12th year and sell well over 110 million console systems.

More importantly, both DS and PS2 were phenomenal systems with diverse, impressive catalogues of software. Why we can't celebrate that, instead of enduring another tribalistic, fanboy-centric circle jerk thread about PS2 versus DS? Or are the numbers more important than the experiences each system provided? Such a shame that fans of both sides of this argument haven't bothered to celebrate that, but instead opted for these kinds of silly little threads.

After so many 'DS will sell more than PS2 with ease'  threads you come wait to late with this post.  Just accept that you lost =p.

My comments are aimed at both sides, and I have been irritated by both the DS threads and PS2 threads. They are completely unnecessary.

Comparing console and game sales is pretty much what this site is about.  Sure it's silly in the grand scheme of things but not too much so to make a thread about.

The DS never reached 155.1M the PS2 did through march 2012, right now PS2 is likely around 157-158M

PS2 didn't sell that many either. PS2 only sold 153.68, and DS has sold higher at 154.55.

Have you not read any of this thread or any other threads on this forum about PS2 & DS sales? It is a FACT that Vgchartz numbers are wrong for the PS2 & DS, and this is a thread discussing what the REAL numbers are.

The PS2 has sold more than the DS, and the DS is never likely to over take it.

So... what are the REAL numbers ?

So far, we only have speculation here. Is there any other tool to track REAL numbers besides Vgchartz.

All we know is that PS2 sold at least 153,68 million and Ds sold 154.55 million, AT LEAST. Is there any OFFICIAL statement that proves they sold more than that ?

Or are we discussing empty numbers ?

As of March 2012 a year ago the PS2 sold 155.1m

As of March 2013 the DS has sold 153.87m

During the past fiscal year the PS3+PS2 have sold a combined total of 16.5m. Sony have said that this fiscal year they sold fewer PS3's than last fiscal year and last fiscal year they sold 13.9m PS3's. So that means that the maximum the PS3 could have sold this fiscal year was 13.8m, and when you subtract that from the 16.5m combined yearly sales total that leaves a MININUM of 2.7m PS2's sold.

So it is a FACT that the minimum the PS2 sales can be is 155.1m + 2.7m = 157.8m as of March 2013.

However if you want to believe that the PS2 has only sold that minimal amount then you have to believe that the PS3 has infact sold 77.7m with the difference in total numbers which is highly unlikely due to the fact that:

1. All other independent sales trackers show the PS3 is down more than 1-2%

2. Jack Tretton CEO of Sony America said that the PS3 has sold roughly 77m.

The lastest Sony shipped numbers for PS2 is 155.1m as of March, 2012... the lastest shipped number for DS is 153.87m as of March, 2013.

Said that how can DS sold 154.55 if Nintendo shipped 153.87m.

And if Sony just shipped PS3 from April 2012 to March 2013 then the PS3 is at 80.3m shipped right now and we know it is close to 77m... so PS2 shipped at least 3 million units in this time that put it ~158m shipped units right now.

So the actual situation...

PS2: ~158m
DS: 153.87m

DS will never outship PS2... sorry.

These are official numbers release every quarter by Nintendo and Sony... you can found everything here http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/en/sales/hard_soft/index.html and here http://www.scei.co.jp/corporate/data/bizdata_hardware_e.html.

You only issue is to believe in the bad VGC tracking lol.. they have the DS selling over 500k units more than what Nintendo manufactured lol lol lol.

The DS is not a console otherwise the PC is a console and is the best selling gaming console of all time.

Saying DS isn't a gaming console is like saying humans aren't mammal.

Saying a PC is a gaming console is like saying all animals are mammals.

In fact, given that the DS possesses its own screen and the PS2 does not, DS actually fits the definition of gaming console more accurately.

Businesses do not define handhelds is consoles. So if peoplke want to change the business definition. It is really changoing it to mean a device that plays games. Meanings tablets also count and the Ipad has  or will surpass the DS and PS2. I am just saying if you are changing a definition to meet your liking than it applies to everything. that meets definition.

Not a big deal to me it is just worth pointing out.

Of course. Who ever thought that the PS2 could be dethroned?

I thought the DS had passed them a long time ago. Oh well. The Wii might have passed them if Nintendo actually made some games for the system and continued to promote it for 5 more years.

There's a high chance the WIi finishes last actually.

Hail to the king baby ... *In Duke's voice*

Sony has much better market penetration into the second and third world (markets besides the US, JP, and EU).

These emerging markets are perfect for selling older, cheaper gaming hardware such as PS2. Sony reinforced this with their recent conference in Brazil. These markets are also quickly growing, and will become much more significant in the coming years.

In other words by starting early and making the Playstation brand well known in emerging markets, Sony is effectively investing in the future. As these markets grow and more of their consumers gain disposable income, their first choice when it comes to modern gaming will be this well established brand they have known for years. Latecomers will only have to fight an uphill battle against a well entrenched opponent to gain market share.

Don't think the US/JP/EU market triumvirate will last for too long. China has already grown explosively in terms of buying power.

This is very true. Nintendo and MS should take note of how these markets are growing. They need to start marketing themselves to a broader community.

OT: All I have to say is that the DS is still in production. Other than that, okay.

Hail to the King, baby. Of both HW and SW sales.

Pretty awesome that it becomes clear that the PS2 will keep this crown and that the PS3 has overtaken the 360 in the same day.
