This is a strange acknowledgement from a company that just released the 3DS and WiiU. Two systems who spec-wise cannot support any new level of gameplay (from a strictly power perspective) and who's unique abilities (3D/2nd screen) have also failed to create a new venue of gameplay or even a sense of such.

They have also been heavily reliant on old/classic IPs as of the last couple years (and we all know we'll be seeing 3D Mario, Zelda, Mario Kart, Smash Bros on WiiU even without any announcement of such).

Which new levels of gameplay were created when we jumped from the 6th to 7th Generation ? I´m genuinly curious !

That question should be directed at Nintendo since they are the ones making the observation.  But the blantantly obvious answer from them would be Motion Controls.   Obviously Wii didn't have the power to do anything Xbox couldn't but it had an all new way to experience games.   DS added the mechanic of a second screen 8 or so years ago (as did tethered Gameboys on Gc and DSs on Wii) so there's a lack of any sense of 'new experiences' produced via the WiiU's gamepad.

I totally agree. I didn't know this was coming from Iwata himself. Maybe his words will inspire developers to stop making cookie cutter mature rated games and go back to low cost, 40 or 50 dollars games. Maybe give Mario a break, make the next Zelda the last Zelda and move on, instead of bullets and blood and gore go back to character design, cut it with the realism and go by your own design of a character. I personally think they should end the Zelda series and give Mario a brake. What gamer want is new experience, personally what I want is fun gameplay and fun lovable characters that just make you smile, like Kid Icarus Uprising or Sly Cooper.

he probably meant new gameplay mechanics not new characters or IPs.

Nintendo games uses the same characters, but they always bring something new, they are not just more levels in a new game (like CoD) Every Mario game has its new tricks, the same goes for zeldas and pokémons, i mean, at least you cans look at it, and say that it is a different game...

    R.I.P Mr Iwata :'(

Locking as requested by the OP.

Seriously, if anyone is thinking that anything will change with the new platforms, sorry, you´ll be dissapointend.

We will have just more of the same : Call Of Duty, Halo, Racing games that mimic each other, Fifa, Madden, PES, shooters, shooters, shooters, shooters, a new Tekken, a new SF, Just Dance, GTA and lots of Kinect shovelware

The only game so far that really seems to bring something different from what we already know is Watch Dogs, besides that, nothing really stands out
