Forums - Sony Discussion - The cold truth: PS Vita sold less in one year than the PSP in 1 month

Leaked reports from the NPD Group (a market research company covering, among other industries, the video games market) indicate that the Vita has sold about 33’000 units last month in the US, as reported by ArsTechnica.

By comparison, the 3DS reportedly sold about 7 times this amount.

More importantly, ArsTechnica mentions that the Vita has sold about 1 million units in the US since its launch a bit more than 1 year ago. And to give you a sense of perspective, its older sister the original PSP sold 1.12 million units in the US in the month of December 2005 alone. Yup, back then, the PSP sold more in one good month than the Vita did in one year. Ouch?

Similarly, the sales of the Wii U in the US are disappointing for Nintendo, the Wii U selling only half as much as the N64 and the Wii did in their respective 5 first months. Arstechnica notes however that the Wii U is selling roughly a well as the XBox360 and the PS3 did back in their first five months on the market.

Sony hasn’t officially announced any price cut for the Vita in the US yet, but it might be one of the only remaining strategies moving forward… unless their plan is to rely on PS4 sales at the end of the year to boost PS Vita sales.

Will the Vita be Sony’s last portable console? In 2018, when troll gamers tell you piracy killed the Vita, kindly point them to this article, written at a time when the Vita has not been cracked yet.

Yeah very depressing and frustating for me as a vita owner. It surly deserve better sales. BUt the price cut will sure happen ( i expect e3 to anounce it). A price cut right before the summer drought will not have huge impact. It will have the most impact in the time from September to Dezember when the big software arrive.

This is what vita need, this and some bigger games like an new Uncharted and God of War Vita.

I think thats widely known and accepted. Usually you say something is "the cold truth" when the truth is sobering

As for the article, no its not Sony's last portable. Maybe dedicated portable but i think there will be another one. Perhaps a phone model

The Vita is amazing, and I think that eventually it will do good. Not 3ds good, but Psp/Ps3 good. Think about it, Ps3 was considered by many doomed and "Dreamcast" until 2 years after its release, when it got MGS4 and LittleBigPlanet. The Vita will do fine. I know this because as soon as a price cut hit Japan the system started selling out. All the Vita needs is a price cut, it already has some good games that are worth owning the system for out now. Sony will not abandon this console by the way.

After what happened with the 3DS and resellers suffering due to demand not being there like was with Wii, then a huge 3DS price cut to get it selling, I think a lot of people were expecting the same of Vita and waiting for a early price cut, but it hasn't happened.

So true. They even had the same freaking price before cuts!

I still enjoy my vita, it's an amazing handheld and no amount of someone saying BUT THE SALES ARE BAD is gonna change how good of a device it is.

Yup. Same here. However, since hw sales affect games released, I can't help but worry about the vita's future as an owner, though the current announced games sound promising. Wost case scenario we'll see plenty of great indie games which are much more enjoyable on a vita than a phone or a pc.

vita has no gaemzz

I want a GTA and a GoW on teh vita.
Like the most of my friends say. why should we buy a vita if it has no games? They are not going to use it for ytb and stuff, we got tablets aand phones for that

Price cut and a steady release of games happened in Japan at the same time, it got $200 bundle with Call of Duty and Assassin's Creed in NA and Europe and it still didn't worked. Vita is already in the market for more than 1 year and it hasn't caught on. I don't believe the system can recover from that, it simply doesn't have the appeal otherwise the situation would have changed with the price cuts and game releases like it happened with the 3DS.

the vita just has nothing that stands out. It does'nt have that game, that makes you want to rush out and get a vita. I don't feel that it's properly supported in that way.
