Forums - Sony Discussion - How much money Sony really lost with the PS3

i thought we all know PS3 and sony is a financial disaster, the comeback stuff i saw was about the gen and how it is unusual for the third place loser to turn it around sales wise

What is kind of sad about today's games industry is that both Sony and MS use their games machines to push other products. They lose billions selling these machines. But then people (even "analysts" like Patcher) will say that Nintendo "isn't with it" or have a bad hardware strategy. The truth is Nintendo has the only sustainable hardware strategy in the industry. If the MS or Sony games divisions were on their own, they would be considered horribly managed and already be bankrupt.

And no, the Playstation division isn't turning Sony around right now. The credit goes to those brilliant (and profitable) new Xperia phones.

What a hilariously bad thread. Lets not take into consideration Ps4 R&D which Sony said started immediately after Ps3 launch and was also alongside the Vita R&D.

Lets ignore the massive economical downturn as the Ps3 launch that Sony could not have expect.

Let's ignore PSP, which HW sales were probably profitable but no way was the SW.

Let's attribute cell and Blu-ray solely on the Ps3...

And now for another episode of "When cherry picking facts goes wrong."

So the main point of the OP is that MS and SONY made a mistake with the 360 and PS3, and Nintendo is the king of console profits? Or was DirtyP2002's analysis just half-assed and short-sighted, to where he inadvertently pointed out the parallels to the profit/losses of the PS3 and 360?

I love how MS fans jumped in this thread and took the analysis as gospel too.

I am the Playstation Avenger.

PS3 is profitable for Sony, at least as of the last few years.

As for the comback, that thread you're referring to was talking sales. As far as I know, no one has said that the PS3 business as a whole is profitable. it probably never will be.

also PS3 was one of the main reasons why blueray won the format war, this doesnt calculate the money sony is making off of blueray disks

Is this supposed to be new information or.. ?

You made this thread because there were PS guys who claimed that Sony had NEVER lost money with PS3(which you know DAMN WELL is not the case) or because you took offense to the comeback thread as an MS fan whose eyes boiled seeing PS fans happy?

And it was a well worth sacrifice (takes a sip off beer and puts glass back into HD-DVD 360 adapter disc tray).

PS3 is profitable now but will never cover it's loses from the first few years and was a disaster for Sony. Hopefully Sony doesn't take a loss on every PS4 sold like some crazy people expect them to.

What about PSP and PS2 profits through 2005-2013? The PS3 losses may be bigger than people think, but isn't really shown well because PSP and PS2 were all consolidated into "Playstation".

Much like how Nintendo made a profit on GBA and hid GC losses behind that.
