Forums - Sony Discussion - PS4: Sony went for “cheaper hardware” for fear of smaller install base – Cousins

It not the only reason though. They clearly wanted a one chip design and the PS4 is pushing the limits in that department. Also a mid-end gpu these days uses more power and creates more heat than a high end gpu did 8 years ago.

Ps4 is at about the highest point spec wise when you look at price/performance and power/performance, going any higher and power requirements and price will go up much faster than additional performance. The only part where they could go all out was memory and they did.

They were wise to do so, they've learned their lesson from the PS3.

what??

I thought it was an expensive cutting edge machine. Good to hear that then, maybe it means we can look at a 350€ price tag ?

It won't be cheap.... It will just be cheaper than the ps3. The parts alone cost around $500, I've posted it before! They'll take a loss, maybe $100 on each ps4 and it'll be affordable. Nothing to do with the components inside...

Upgrading my PC will be my priority to be able to run superior multiplats, maybe I'll buy a PS4 late 2014 just to play exclusives.

Touché.

Exactly what I'm doing. I'm particularly interested in Wii U since some Nintendo franchises are among my all time favourite, and this time in HD and with gamepad support I'm salivating to see whats coming, and a PS4 somewhere down the road when price is cool and there are a bunch of exclusives that I like.

From the majority of responses, it seems like Nsanity actually posted some good PlayStation news. ;)

How do you figure that? Unless Sony goes and gimps the specs they've already announced most people here know all the important info on what Sony has under the hood for the PS4. I don't see Sony having officially announced 8GB GDDR5 RAM then deciding just before they start up the production line to downgrade to 4GB DDR3 RAM.

I think they'll gimp on some of the flashy stuff they had on the PS3 phate, like the touch sensitive buttons, but they did that with Slim and Super Slim already, so no one's going to be all grumpy face because the box isn't as shiney. It'll still be the sexiest looking console of the new generation, but maybe not supermodel hot.

How do you know this?

Which bit? that it will be the sexiest, or that it might not be supermodel sexy?

Well they picked less exotic components, maybe not as advanced (comparatively) as the PS3 had back in the day...

But how is that a bad thing? I think it's a very smart and healthy decision. Sure, it will not be as powerful as a high or mid range gaming PC, but it's gonna be enough to give some good results and Sony will not lose as much money, as they did with the PS3.
