PS4 Demo vs NVIDIA (PC) Demo

Quantic Dream's Demo (PS4) 128 50.20%

NVIDIA's Demo (GTX Titan) 124 48.63%

Total:252

One is moving showing deformation or tesselation while the other just poses with no movements.

You can also clearly see the textures on the old guy are nowhere near as high res as the Nvidia demo.

Volumes are also more apparent in the Nvidia demo while the ones from PS4 is just textured normals.

The Nvidia demo has more lightning and a background while the other has 2 light sources and an empty background...

They are both impressive but difficult to compare maybe we should wait until we get to see PS4 demos that actually move and show what the machine can do so until this happens the Nvidia demo is hands down technicaly more impressive and it ran at half the power of the card.

In terms of animation we really haven't gone past this old demo

Check out my hype threads: Cyberpunk, and The Witcher 3!

As still pictures I prefer the Nvidia one. But when it starts moving it creeps me out.
Movement from Quantic Dream looks better, I guess less is more in this case.

They both look ill anyway.

If you had to say which one would give more of a "creepy" feeling, which would you choose?

I'm going to answer that myself!

A cartoon works because it's only a representation of what we consider 'alive' and so our evolutionarily programmed brains has no problem interpreting it. Even inanimate objects, when instilled with animations attributable to humans or animals can persuade us to invest emotionally in what we are watching. But the uncanny valley is different. It's not about resolution or polygon count ... it's about how we associate with a perception of reality. If you look at a person across the street, you will NOT see the detail you see in these two examples, BUT you will recognise them as 'real'. Why?

The nuances of reality are so subtle that power will never be able to emulate them. Only a full understanding of those little details can break the uncanny valley curse. Watch that David Cage video for instance. Take careful note of his lower lid. It almost imperatively moves up slightly, narrowing the eye but not enough for the visual side of our brain to notice. It does however plug into our evolved subconscious brain and so is more likely to convince us that their is a subtext to the animation ... in other words 'soul'.

The PS5 Exists.

Nvidia demo looks more life-like but that could be due to the person being not an old man like in the QD demo.
Either way I think both tech demos are pointless. How many games will actually look like this? Will anyone ever make a PC-exclusive that takes advantage of the high-end GPUs? I say its unlikely.

Exactly. Cage's demo just doesn't give off the "creepy" tone of the typical 3D character. Now of course, it doesn't look as good, graphically, then other tech demos, but it has more soul than many of them, Titan demo included.

I think that Cage's game on the PS4 is litterally going to stun people. I believe it will be so convincing that he'll be able to pass it off as real without arousing suspicion. I think the tech Nvidia is showing off needs Cage more than Cage needs Nvidia's tech.

One thing is for certain though, the ball system needs to go.

lol that is what I tried to say in my post... seems like the old guy was better made with a more talented team... the nVidia one hold the tech hoursepower but lacks more work or a expertise team.

But that a demo of course... so I can't see nVidia wasting a lot of time to make it better or paid a more talented team to create a demo... now the old guy I think the Cage will use the engine for future games.

They both creep me out and fall deeply into the Uncanny Valley. But the Nvidia demo is far more lifelike, just not lifelike enough to be mistaken for life.

I disagree regarding David Cage's demo. That one doesn't creep me out at all. The NVIDIA demo looks a little more real, so I can see it there.

Now, onto the question, which of them do you prefer? I'd like an answer from people who post.

I told you. The Nvidia demo is far more lifelike. So yeah, it's the one I prefer.

As for the creep factor. For me they both are squarely in the Uncanny Valley. The Quantic Dreams one is so unlike a real human face, in both shape and texture, that I really don't see why it impressed so many people. The facial animation is pretty good, but Nvidia's animation and details are so much better that it makes the Qunatic Dreams old man look like a wax doll. The old man is deep in the uncanny valley with no hope to get out, the Nvidia demo is futily climbing up the other side of the valley wall. Niether are close enough to photorealism to be anything but impressive on a technical level. As far as simulating the human face, they do it better than previous real time demos, but no so much better as to make anyone believe they are looking at a fellow human.

So unlife like? Yeah that's just bull. You have to remember that you're not seeing the full HD version of the demo. You also seem to forget that it's not a vertical climb out of the uncanny valley. If you think these demos are in the valley, then where on earth do you place things such as LA Noir?

Such a difficult decision. The old man is clearly a more complex model, his skin is saggy, he has hair on his head, eyebrows are made of polygons and aren't just textured, etc. The nvidia demo just has much better lighting and shading. I say tie. Nvidia was going more of showing off new lighting systems, Quantic Dream was showing off new modeling. If Quantic Dream can produce the same level of lighting then they'd have the better demo hands down but they didn't. Better model vs better lighting, they have their strengths and weaknesses.

Good stuff there, my first time seeing it. However, I'd argue that the old man here tops it:

That's really impressive though I think a slight weakness with the younger heads in it is the lack of imperfections that are usually highlighted in facial movements as areas of weakeness as such, and again the eyes are too perfect as well as lack of nasal movement (I see it doesn't look to be tracked at all) Any idea if that's in a game engine or pre-rendered?
