Forums - PC Discussion - EA: We rejected offline play for SimCity because "it didn't fit with our vision."

Don't worry EA, it's ok.

Your vision, your game.

My money on my pocket. And I actually reinstalled Sim City 4 and I'm playing it now.

That Cities XL tempted me during the last Steam sales. Maybe I'll get during the next one.

Please excuse my bad English.

Currently gaming on a PC with an i5-4670k@stock (for now), 16Gb RAM 1600 MHz and a GTX 1070

Steam / Live / NNID : jonxiquet    Add me if you want, but I'm a single player gamer.

EA said that the game is all about regional play, they said this before they launched the game, I don't know why everyone is so surprised

If people didn't buy it, then they would definitely have re-considered, but given that it has probably sold nearly 1m copies already, they won't be too upset

Having said that, I feel that Maxis are going to be doing some serious PR work which will probably include some free DLC, though maybe not an offline mode as they seem to like their regions...

Why couldn't they just have an offline mode and an online mode, as in one where you can do whatever you want and the other where you do regional play? I think you already know the answer.

I agree though. We are only a small minority voicing our opinions compared to the vast majority that bought the game. But it still sucks and I'm sure others who bought the game and haven't been keeping up with it as much are thinking the same.

I am not as cynical as others. I do actually think this is just the way that Maxis have designed the game to try and embrace these new social experiences that so many people strive for. I do think that they have made a mistake with it. There definitely seems that there is no reason why they couldn't make some offline single city mode (ideally a much larger city).

I have personally been playing LOADS of the game and have really really enjoyed it and have had minimal online issues, until now. For some reason I now can't play the game, but I still don't have any regrets over my purchase, I know I shouldn't accept it, but I really should not being playing it all the time

I actually think the online aspect that they've incorporated into the game is pretty interesting. It makes the game feel more dynamic and ever-changing.  I just wished EA would listen to their fans more and give them what they want. After all, the past simcities were built on the single player experience.

"it didn't fit with our vision to make more money" FTFY

If there's one thing I've learned since I started coming to internet forums, it's that games are art, and that an artist's vision is the most important thing. So what's the problem here?

But I don't think design by comittee is a very good idea. If you did what the fans asked for, it would be a free game with no DLC or microtransactions. Added to that, they can't start the game by saying what do the fans want, they are pointless as a game studio if they can't come up with their own ideas

If they wanted to implement their online social features then they should have called it SimCity Online.
But it's just called SimCity, presumably because they don't want to discourage people who don't like MMO style games from purchasing it. That's misleading.
Either that, or the online features are just a cover for online DRM.

So Maxis & EA are in the wrong either way.

Don't use "Art" as an excuse to defend douchey business practices. Having a vision does not make a company exempt from criticism.

Good luck getting a project that doesn't promise making money greenlit at a large company like EA.

So, EAs vision is to make incredible games that you cannot actually play.

EA = Biggest Tease in Gaming?

Well when their vision of games lines up with my vision of games maybe I will purchase their titles again. Untill then I hop they have fun fulfilling their vision.
