Forums - Gaming Discussion - If MS switches to GDDR5 now, did Sony make a silly mistake?

i might be wrong... but neither the PS3 or the XB360 use DDR memory... PS3 use xdr for main and GDDR3 for GPU... and the XB360 use GDDR3 for their "one pool" architecture...

You're right.

and if that worked so well for the xbox 360, i think it will work just fine in the PS4, even more if we take into consideration that GDDR5 is a huge improvement over GDDR3.

if we go by the rumors, next box will have DDR3 (not GDDR3 like some people say) witch is cheaper and lower latency, helped by de eSRAM, and that makes it, also, a good solution.

I think it's funny how many people dismissed the idea of having 8GB RAM on a console. And now, bang, both next gen consoles have 8GB just like Epic, Crytek and DICE were asking for.

8GB of RAM is good, but the cheapest Sony could sell it for is about $450. If MS really goes with GDDR3, they could undercut the PS4's price by up to $100.

a similar hardware with cheaper RAM but integrated kinect2 to undercut the ps4 by 100dollar????

GDDR5 RAM costs around 4-5x as much as GDDR3, plus Sony will bundle the new PS Eye with every console, which will help to offset the Kinect 2 price. Another thing, nobody expcts MS to out-manpower Sony after what they showed yesterday.

I think Sony's upgrade from 4GB to 8GB is the reason we didn't see a box yesterday.

Sony must have felt the need to match general storage and the relatively late change in size of RAM is forcing modifications to their design.

Now, MS may be doing the same thing. They may not want the 1/2 the speed RAM combined with eSRAM on the GPU. They may realize that this setup will be harder on devs as its less base PC-like. So they could scrap the eSRAM design and go with full GDDR5.

HOWEVER, there is one other point to think about. The cost. MS is including a Kinect in the box. So that may force them to stick with their current design as it reduces cost dramatically on memory which is then offset by the Kinect hardware.

I don't think MS will change.

so you think that ram changes the design of a console?

Of course. It changes the design of the motherboard and thuse everything else.

the amount of ram does not change the design of a console

C'mon now, superchunk..

Are you serious? You dont' think it increases the heat, wattage use, physical mapping of motherboard and placement of all that ish? They are adding twice the number or RAM chips. Its freaking obvious it will change the way its all layed out. Since the internals are changing, it should be freaking obvious that they'd need to change the casing in various ways.

This isnt' a PC with open memory slots. Its RAM built into the motherboard. More chips would require changing it all up to some degree.

Don't think so, coz dev kits already have 8gigs, so design of the board is pretty much locked, nothing to change there.. and i m pretty sure sony would have had two mb design one for 4 gigs and 8gigs. And why sony didnt show the case, i like to assume they saved that for E3, to not allow MS steal the limelight. Surprisingly Sony has started this generation with good PR marketing tactics, which PS3 sorely missed.

In this very thread, only a few posts above ypurs, I have explained in detail why MS cannot do the changes you seem zo favour.

Why do you insist on writing nonsense instead of reading the thread?

These early dev kits were slapped together PCs. The PS4 design was 4GB and I'm pretty positive they wouldn't of had a fully detailed alternate design with casing based on 8GB. That would be wasted R&D. This is morethan likely a reactionary move by Sony to match the 8GB in neXtBox and they are likely redesigning the entire thing to account for the dramatic physical increase in RAM.

Sure part of that is conjecture and assumptions... but they are the most likely ones when you consider all options.

I think i skipped reading your comment because you lacked an avatar

but.... uhhh.... i didn't say anything about M$. I was talking to superchunk about the PS4 not being shown...

Design for both consoles was fixed a LONG time ago. Two years or more. It isn't something that can be swapped out, validated, and put into mass production in six months.

Secondly, when has a single spec ever decided the fate of a console?

and with that said, games have already been optimized for each console, so any changes now...........just read what soleron said.

secondly. never. not to mention, the most powerful console, has never won the war. things look to change on that front.

Wasn't the Super NES more powerful than the Genesis? Yep, thought so!

i don't go back that far lol. i'm bad when it comes to tech. maybe the number 1 selling console manufactor (Sony) can do the hat trick lol.

what about the SNES?
