Forums - Gaming Discussion - Hiroyuki Ito (Director: FF6, FF9, FF12) has not worked on a single Square Enix game this entire gen!

Wow! This is a really notable point considering that Sakaguchi believes Ito can once again make FF a leading and respected series in gaming. It really puts things into perspective of why console FF has failed this gen.

The last game Ito actually worked hands-on with was FFXII IZJS, released on PS2 in August 2007. Since then he has only worked hands-off (i.e. supervisor, special thanks, original concept) on games. In other words, Hiroyuki Ito has not had a hands-on with a single game this gen (DS, PSP, iOS, 360, PS3, Wii). I find that really shocking. Anybody that knows what this man has done for FF should. If you don't know Hiroyuki Ito's track record then read the top of his Wikipedia page:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hiroyuki_Ito

There is only one possible reason why Hiroyuki Ito has not had any hands-on roles for Square Enix games this gen:

Hiroyuki Ito is too busy designing, producing and directing Final Fantasy XV. The scale and ambition of the game is so great that he can't work hands-on with any other game.

Is this a deluded belief or is it a realistic mentality? As of me typing this, Hiroyuki Ito is still a Square Enix employee and he's not a low rank one, either. He was promoted to Producer/Director by Yoichi Wada back in 2006. This is the exact same role Yoichi Wada gave Naoki Yoshida in 2010 when he took over FFXIV. Hiroyuki ito must definitely be working on something as Producer/Director and Yoichi Wada and the rest of Square Enix management are keeping whatever it is as classified as the inside of Area 51.

I would appreciate if somebody made a NeoGAF thread about this issue as I would be interested in reading their opinions on the matter. Seriously, will an entire console generation really go past with Hiroyuki Ito not working hands-on with a single game?

I don't know, but I hope his next game has the same charm as Final Fantasy IX, since it's such an amazing game, second only to X, but it definitely has the best art style and some of the best characters in the entire franchise... I'd love to see something similar made in HD!

I'd love to see a medieval world like FFIX but with the realistically proportioned characters of FFXII. Also, make it have seamless battles like FFXII and Xenoblade and have a world scale as vast as Skyrim.

Regardless, I just find it amazing that Hiroyuki Ito hasn't worked on a single game this gen. Surely he must be busy with something. He can't still be at the company and being paid to do nothing, right?

Square Enix needs to fire every director/producer that isn't Nomura and Ito. Only then can they be saved.

Damn. All aboard the hype train now.

Never played VI, IX was great, and XII was meh. If this guy was the director or not means nothing to me based on the quality of his past titles. However, I would like for him to be the directory merely for the fact that all of his titles would then be divisible by three, which is kinda cool in a very uncool way.

Don't fire Naoki Yoshida. He's turning FFXIV into a masterpiece with the reboot. Also, don't fire Yoshinori Kitase, but demote him from producer to event planner.

No Kitase has to go, he's part of the problem.  I'll say he is the problem cause Toriyama should have been fired for the mess that Final Fantasy has turned into and Kitase's probably keeping him employed.

Well I actually mean with IX proportions and stuff too lol, since it's definitely the most interesting game in the series art wise in my opinion, and the characters actually suited being short with big heads, lol. I'd love to see the exact style replicated into one of the next Final Fantasy games.

And yeah, he's got to be busy with something, I mean, this gen has been going since 2005 (X360 release) and he hasn't shown any signs of working on ANYTHING yet... but Square Enix can't be paying him to do nothing all this time, I mean, 8 years with nothing to show? That's just ridiculous, and I wouldn't be paying him, that's for sure...

Well, I wouldn't be against that style. If it looked as good as the FFIX FMVs then it would be cool to play a game like that.

When you put it that way, I totally agree with you. After all, Tanaka got scapegoated for FFXIV when he didn't even direct the game. He was only the producer. That's the exact same role Kitase had on the entire FFXIII trilogy and also Dirge of Cerberus: FFVII.

Preposterous. I know Vaan sucks, but blame the japanese audience for forcing us to cope with him. Without that observer protagonist - and that's most of the issue here, not the character per se - the game would have been far better.

And if your problems aren't alongside these lines and you feel a compulsion to post something related to gambits I swear I'll ruthlessly hunt you in RL.
