Forums - General Discussion - Will old School style CGI animation replace Hand Drawn for making cartoons in the future?

With Smart 3D HD TVs costing $300 and getting cheaper, plus the fact that over 99% of manufacture TVs in the world today are 3D TVs, will CGI animated old school style (which looks exactly the same as a Hand Drwan cartoon) replace actual Hand Drawn Cartoons in the future?

My examples would be:

The cinematics in such games as "Rhythm Thief and the Emperor's Treasure" & Liberation Maiden, just to name a few games

As well as The Simpsons Maggie Simpson 3D Short called "The Longest Daycare" (a look of what's to come whenever Matt Groening decides to make the Simpsons Movie 2 & 3)

So what do you think on this subject?

And what would you like to see make the leap from 2D 30 fps cartoon to 3D 60 fps cartoon?

For me on the last question, well it would be: Futurama & South Park & Venture Brothers & Black Dynomite & Family Guy & American Dad & Cleveland Show & Aqua Teen you know what it is. And to bring back cancel shows like: Stroker and Hoop & Assy McGee & Minoriteam & Dilbert.

And what would you like to have remade?

For me personally, I would like remakes of Dragonball all the above & Bleach & Trinity Blood & G Gundam & Big O (with 3rd Season) & Yuigoh all the above & Full Metal Alchemist (both series) & Digimon & first 5 to 8 seasons of the Simpsons........well that's all I can think of off the top of my mind, LOL.

I prefer hand drawn for tv and CGI for movies. To the answer of your question, Idk.

Currently own:

  • Ps4

Currently playing: Witcher 3, Walking Dead S1/2, GTA5, Dying Light, Tomb Raider Remaster, MGS Ground Zeros

CGI is still too expensive for animated TV shows.

This is very true. That may also be why CGI for TV shows seemingly sucks.

I'm talking about an old way of designing CGI, that makes it look exactly the same as a Hand Drawn Cartoon when view in 2D (and trust me, no one can tell the difference).

But in 3D it looks like a three-dimensional version of a Hand Drawn Cartoon.

If you have a 3DS then go to eShop and watch the "Nintendo Show 3D" that contains scenes from "Rhythm Theif and the Emperor's Treasure" or go to YouTube and watch 2D videos of the Cinematics of this Sega game (it looks like Hand Drawn Cartoon, but it's NOT). But if you see it in 3D then you will see the awesomeness that I am talking about.

Yeah, but Futurama constantly has CGI in parts of the show, and so does Family Guy. But their CGI is the obvious kind since their paying money to be notice in 2D.

And then there's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Nickelodeon) & Transformers Prime & Star Wars Clone Wars (the CGI one).

It seems as long as they don't put any polygons, then it is very cheap, which explains the eShop game: "Liberation Maiden" with it's pure CGI Cinematics (wish more of it had 3D on).

What a coincidence, I just watched this video last night. A wonderful technique that merges CG and hand-drawn animation. I'd love to see it applied to some of the shows you mentioned.
