Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Is the Wii a Failure among Nintendo fans?

For me it was no more disappointing then any other Nintendo console. It gave me everything I wanted out of a Nintendo console...
1. 3D Zelda (we got 2)
2. 3D Mario (we got 2, and they were the best mario games in a many years)
3. Metroid (again, we got 2 but 1 was kinda disappointing)
4. a handfull of other fun games ( Mario Kart, Kirby, smash bros.)
5. a couple third party gems (Sonic Colors, Muramasa, Red Steel 2)

I'm satisfied, and prob my second or third fav Nintendo console.

This just proves that Sony fans dominate, and that MS fans are second. Wait what? No, Poll should never be used to count how many people their are from each fanbase.

OT: Some people were let down that they took up motion gaming first, then at the end the support was very small. I think during the golden years though it was good to be a Wii gamer as opposed to the opposition.

Although most third parties hated the Wii, and arguably even Nintendo hated the Wii, I must say I seldomly had as much fun with any console than I had with the Wii. It certainly didn't fail me, although it already feels a little dated now (and I'm not talking about graphics).

I don't think Nintendo has failed me personally. I'm much happier with the Wii than I was with the GameCube. I enjoyed the 1st party efforts more, and the lack of 3rd party didn't bother me as much because I had a gaming PC to fall back on.

Business-wise, however, I think Nintendo definitely dropped the ball. They couldn't maintain the support that their console needed while working on launching its successor. This led to many fans becoming bored due to the lack of new titles and relying on competitor's systems for their gaming needs. Now, maybe this was a necessary move because Nintendo is too small to spread their resources like Microsoft or Sony, but I still see that as a failure on their part. With the massive amounts of profits they made over the years, they should have taken the opportunity to grow, so they wouldn't run into the same problems they've been running into since the N64 days.

Maybe with this upcoming restructuring this year things will change, I guess we'll see in 5 years or so.

Sums up exactly how I feel, except I didn't find it an issue at all to find fun third party efforts. Sure, we missed out on almost all of the huge, big name, AAA third party games, but I had just as much fun with unheralded games like Muramasa, Tenchu 4 and Rune Factory. I'd still like to see all of the blockbuster third party games make their way to Wii U though.

It was great at first, but it didn't end well, and that's what people will remember.

The Wii really only failed me the last couple of years of its life. Before that I had a lot of fun with it despite the fact that I yearned for more advanced tech.

For me Wii/GC is the best console ever, im not surprised by the result of the poll, Msony fans are much more active on the internet

You're not reading the poll right, it was "which console won YOUR heart," and the PS3 is a very logical answer for that question. It started with not many note worthy games, but quietly built up a very solid portfolio of exclusives and solid multiplats, and is really the only console that seems to even be trying anymore.

In contrast to that, the Wii has had 5-10 games even worth mentioning in over 2 years. The system has been AMAZING for retro gamers, with a new Punch Out, a new a Boy and His Blob, 2 Kirby games and the return of 2D Mario to home consoles. That was all a long time ago, though,Nintendo hasn't cared about the system since 2010 (how hard was it to get Nintendo of America to localize Xenoblade?) so most Nintendo fans have relocated to greener pastures until the Wii U picks up some steam.

Uh... How exactly is "which console won YOUR heart" any different from "Which home console did you enjoy the most this past generation?" Surely, the console that won people's hearts was the one that they enjoyed he most?

And in any case, I did say it was "along the lines of" that question. So that part was already adressed.

No, it's not the same question so people it wouldn't get the same answers from everyone, so "along the lines of" is bad paraphrasing. "Won the hearts of" implies that you didn't always have strong feeling for the console from the get go - I loved my Wii since I bought it.  PS3 had to earn my respect so to speak.

Most people "may" have answered as to what thier favorite console was, but it's not a 1 to 1 question.

Yes and no.

The Wii was never universally liked by Nintendo fans who post on message boards. This is nothing new. Back in 2007 Nintendo fans were already up in arms regarding Nintendo abandoning their fanbase, even though they knew that games like Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, Super Mario Galaxy and Super Smash Bros. Brawl were coming. The Wii was always polarizing a console.

What's having a negative influence on the poll is that many of the people who liked the Wii aren't visiting this site anymore, because Nintendo changed direction with the 3DS and Wii U. If you aren't playing much, if any, new video games anymore, then there isn't much of a point to talk about them anymore.

So what should Nintendo have done with the Wii U according to that "Wii Crowd."  You seem to imply that Nintendo is seeking out a hardcore crowd, but with a gimmicky (although I LOVE the tablet controller) under powered controller, no real third party support, and no "core" first party games shown yet, I don't think that's the case.  They even lead with a 2D Mario.

I'm not trying to be snarky, just curious what your opinion is.

The Wii had a ton of Nintendo love with:

2 - Zeldas
2 - 3D Marios
2-4 Metroid (4 including NPC Prime 1,2)
1-2 2D Mario (2 including Mario Anniversary)
2-3 Kirby (3 incl Kirby Dream Collection)
1-2 Donkey Kong (incl NPC DK)
2 - Mario Party
3-4 Mario Sports (Strikers, Baseball, Sports Mix, NPC Tennis)
2 Excite Bike sequels
Super Smash Bros Brawl
Mario Kart
Punch Out!
Super Paper Mario
Xenoblade
The Last Story, Pandora's Tower (in Japan/Europe anyway by Nintendo)
2 Fatal Frames (2 Japan, 1 Europe)
3 Pokemon
Animal Crossing City Folk
Plus gems like Rhythym Heaven, Fire Emblem, Endless Ocean (x2), NPC Pikmin 1&2
Granted the last three years were pretty lean (2012 was actually quite good in Europe IMO)

Add VC and WW. Wii was a great Nintendo system. Unless you were a StarFox or F-zero fan.
