Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Forget Apple TV, Microsoft and Game Consoles are the Future of Television

Microsoft, and Steve Balmer, have done a remarkable job with Xbox, Xbox Live and the TV services. In the USA it not just limited to Netflix and Hulu - but many, many other apps (Including Sony’s), Music, Information, News, Kid’s interaction, even Fashion and many different kinds of Entertainment (similar to how Roku add's channels.) Xbox Live is more than just being able to play Netflix or online gaming.

I think one of the biggest wins was adding Amazon Digital Video. Amazon is going to be a major player in the future of electronics and entertainment. The fact that they use Android and sell/rent videos, could have caused a turf war, but MS added Amazon anyway. Which I think may be one of the smartest moves – in the same way you can add Smart Glass to your Ipad. The Xbox Video Service (formally Zune) exceeds Amazon's in price, but also quality with full 1080P and 5.1 sound.

Microsoft often works with the people you would think they should hate the most. IMO, Apple wouldn’t be in existent today if Microsoft had not make good business software for them years ago.

Internationally, yes it would be great if they can add more services. Do people realize how complicated international copyright laws are? And yes, higher bandwidth will be nice and open up more opportunities when it comes to your town.

Plus the best part, but a part that needs a bit of work, is the voice search through Bing. So you can find which one of the many apps where you can find what you are looking, but it does need a little updating as sometime I can find stuff in an app that it doesn’t find. After the frustration of trying to type on a Roku remote, you really appreciate voice search.

We see what Nintendo has to offer. And I will be really interested to see what Sony’s does. I know they have been trying to make the PS the ‘all in one’ device for well over a decade now. So the PS4 reveal should be something.

Really not sure I see any point of Consol over PC's since Kinect, Wii and other alternative ways to play have been abandoned.

Top 50 'most fun' game list coming soon!

Tell me a funny joke!

It's strange that this article doesn't mention the PS3, since it's actually a more popular streaming device than the 360. If Microsoft continues with Gold, and Sony is smart, they'll include "free access to video apps" as part of their advertising with the PS4.

It might tie to the fact that PS3 owners started using their PS3's as blu-ray players a long time ago and as such, the PS3 has been a hugely popular media device for a long time. That is not something you want to mention in your own press conference. It would be strange for Sony to mention that MS has more stable servers, faster download time on all content and updates and more streaming services available in a press release about PSN as well, wouldn't it?

What press release?  I'm not sure I understand.

I misunderstood, thought the article was based off of MS press releases.

In that case I'll revise my answer to; I don't know.

Ahahahahahah! ...Ahahahah!!...Ahahah!! Oh that was good...microsoft is the "future" of tv. Maybe if this was 1996 lol.... That's a good one. Post PC world isn't looking very hospitable to microsoft. It's their own fault though.

Not sure if serious or just trolling.

Kinect, XBox are huge sucess... MS is already winning Tv battle with Xbox 360, let alone 720.

Post Pc world ? where do you live ? Pcs are here to stay, dont be fooled boy. Without Pcs world was doomed there wouldnt be videogames or most of things that are today.

Pc were the past, are the present and the Future.

Are you living in reality? Samsung, Apple, and Google are dominating every multimedia device out on the market. The xbox is "winning" the tv battle? How? By paying Sony and other studios to use their content on the xbox marketplace, that no one outside xbox fans use? Any numbers to support your statement? No, didn't think so. I laughed when I read that comment you made.... delusional lol. No offense there, dude.

they are winning the battle as in you can currently use your 360 as a set top box for some cable providers. Where is apple set top box? Where is googles? They dont have them yet, ms does already and has been woring with the cable companies to garer deals. Having a console that from the beging is designed to be a set top box substitute will make a difference in how smooth it goes and how many features it has. But with its voice controls the 360 has become my media device of choice.

Streaming video is dominated by Apple, followed by Android, and probably will for a long time.  Thankis for injecting some reality into this.
