Even if that were to ever happen you would have the argument shift from units sold overall to profits made overall. Which is actually happening already.

Everyone knows we all care about our consoles selling more and getting more developer support that way our purchases have an extended life span.

Unless you own stock you shouldn't care at all about profits as they serve us gamers zero benefit. Look at the Wii. It made the most profit this generation and sold the most, meanwhile it was last to show, first to go.
