Forums - Gaming Discussion - A 360/PS3 Comparison Issue we tend to Forget: 360 Piracy

Top 5 Pirated Xbox 360 Games

1. Gears of War 3 (890,000) (September 2011)

2. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (830,000) (November 2011)

3. Battlefield 3 (760,000) (October 2011)

4. Forza Motorsport 4 (720,000) (October 2011)

5. Kinect Sports: Season Two (690,000) (October 2011)

The above is an old link. It shows numbers of the most pirated games in 2011. Id imagine we should get a 2012 list soon.

http://www.vgchartz.com/yearly/2012/Global/

This link which shows the number of software sold for each console for 2012.

X360 137,316,716 (-11%) 731,253,117
PS3 130,870,084 (-12%) 635,424,313

Now this is about retail only sales and thats perfectly fine. But some people use this as a method of gauging the current size of the 360 and PS3 gaming instal base. Thats where I feel this issue needs to come to light as millions of 360 gamers will never show up on these stats because they get their games through less legal means.

PS3 hasn't been hacked to successfully pirate games while 360 has been for years. So when you see a PS3 game sales, you know thats the number that bought it. For 360, retail numbers tell a similar story, but at the same time do not represent the actual number of gamers playing them. The above link shows an extra 890 000 players playing Gears of War 3, and 720 000 people playing Forza 4 that will never show up on Vgchartz. People downplaying the install base of Gears of War and Forza are certainly unaware of this. People claiming the 360/PS3 gap of COD sales are shrinking? Retail sure, but actual gamers are playing at least 830 000 copies that can't be counted.

I personally am VERY curious to see the 2012 list, because I would like to see how many times people pirated Halo 4 to see how many people are actually playing it, ontop of legal retail sales.

This is wrong as such this whole argument is based on a mistake, sorry sales, this just isn't the case.

Can't find stats of Ps3 games downloaded but say Uncharted 1 on pirate bay a 20gb 6 year old game has 23 seeders and 70 leechers, that is 70 people actively downloading that game right now after 6 years even to say that was an average amount downloaded every day it's 149,520 people with it since launch obviously not accounting for the fact that right now the 70 people downloading it is just a trickle compared to when the ps3 was hacked to play images of games. And yeah... that is just one torrent of it from one site, there are hundreds of sites which host different torrents of Uncharted.

Isn't the big difference that those running soft mod PS3's are not connected to PSN as they have to run older firmware hence they have to make a big sacrifice to pirate where as the 360 users can pirate away and chance their arm they will not get banned and still use XBL.  I've not looked at it for a while so my info might be outdated.  I don't know of anyone who owns a PS3 that pirates but I do know of at least 6 friends that have the ability to pirate including myself as I have a JTAG 360 (not that its used for piracy I hasten to add).

nope you can do absolutely everything you can do with a perfect firmware'd ps3 + so much more it's actually stupid, not just emulation but check this out... literally killing the Vita the offical version of this not being active now. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s1H28Cwb82Y

can use pretty much any ps3 game using remote play if you have the ps3 hacked but... yeah there is anything upto 1-2secs of delay back and forth using the hackers version of it, but still that is using code written by people just pretty much guessing at how to optimize it not the people from Sony who programmed the ps3/vitas OS, I've played sf4 like this a while ago and like... it looked nice but the lag meant not great to play other than the fact that... you can.

Awe, that makes me sad.  Alan Wake could really use an extra million of sales.  More than the other games.

Sure the other games would like it, but they were already much more successful and an extra million wouldn't quite mean as much.

Really not sure I see any point of Consol over PC's since Kinect, Wii and other alternative ways to play have been abandoned.

Top 50 'most fun' game list coming soon!

Tell me a funny joke!

This must be false, the PC is the only platform pirates use, that's why the PC has been dying since 1990.

Is there a reason why Xbox 360 sells more software than PS3? I'm guessing its cause, 360 owners who don't have Xbox Live, complete games and then don't see any reason to continue playing the game whereas PS3 players play games for longer? Or could the rumor that many PS3 owners just use their console as a blue ray player true?

That does seem odd doesn't it? A study was done in may of 2012 that showed that the PS3 was used more often than 360 or Wii aswell so you'd think it would have higher software sales.
