Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Windows 8 proving less popular than Vista

There is no incentive whatsoever for me personally to upgrade to 8 from 7, they look pretty bloody identical. And I think a lot of other people are of the same opinion, majority of the win 8 sales will come from new PC/laptop purchases rather than actual upgrades, which W7 saw happen, as it was actually superior to vista and maybe even xp.

Disconnect and self destruct, one bullet a time.

I have a desktop running 7 and a laptop running 8.

Windows 8 offers no advantages whatsoever, and the inconvenience of a bunch of annoying extra menus that nobody will use, and the need to download an addon to bring back the start menu. I guess it's not as bad as Vista, because it actually works, but Windows 7 is far superior.

Vista worked just fine, its 3rd party drivers that had the issues.

Anyways some of the advantages of windows 8 are convenient App store, boot up/wake up time, better battery life for portable devices and touch screen optimizaion obviously. If one looks at this list and doesn't find anything they would like to spend 39.99 on to upgrade to, they really don't need to install Windows 8.

Right, so it's a tablet OS.

And yet it's being shoehorned into the laptop market.

No it's not a table OS its a portable device optimized OS, which includes laptops. Windows 8 runs much snappier on lower/mid range laptops than windows 7 did and app store, better battery consumption are always welcome.

Desktop users (or people that are frustrated with change) may have legit reasons to crucify windows 8 if it didn't take a whole 2 minutes to install Classic shell which adds a start button, boot to desktop and allows you to use windows 8 just like windows 7.   But even desktop users who are open minded and are willing to pick up some new accessories like a touchscreen monitor or a Logitech T650 touchpad can enjoy Windows 8 over Windows 7.

Well, I see no reason to upgrade my laptops, even though 7 launched those LONG 3 years ago. Really, MS? You let the 360 hang around longer than that. 5-6 years between OSs is more acceptable. It will be interesting to see if this has helped their OS marketshare for tablets and phones for this quarter, though.

Okay, who read the title as "Windows 8 proving less popular than Vita"?

*raises hand*

Anywho, I'm a happy user of Windows 7 and see no reason to upgrade to 8.

that was my first reaction when i saw the news

also windows 7 is so stable and fast I don't see the point in upgrading

Bet reminder: I bet with Tboned51 that Splatoon won't reach the 1 million shipped mark by the end of 2015. I win if he loses and I lose if I lost.

Upgrading your stable and fast desktop to windows 8 wasn't what microsoft was much concerned about when they made Windows 8. Im sure they give each other a high 5 over at Redmond every time someone does upgrade an old Compaq desktop to Win8.

I tried it out in the store and hated it. I also tired it on a tablet and again hated it. Maybe others did the same thing I did. I'll stick with 7.

Explain why?

Money can't buy happiness. Just video games, which make me happy.

I think it will pick up as more touchscreen PC's come out. I'm waiting for the large (22"+) touchscreen all-in-one's to come down in price a little, then I'm getting one (I already have a Surface and love it). Windows 8 is pure awesome on a touchscreen.

its either because he doesnt know how to use it or because he is too lazy to spend 5 minutes and set it ip to work just like windows 7 did.

The only real reasons to hate on windows 8 on a desktop are resistance to change and lazyness, both at the same time. There really arent any functional reasons as anything one did in windows 7 can be done on 8.
