With the Vita on death's door and the PlayStation brand's share of the home console market going from first to worst this gen, having the PS3 just barely inch in front of the 360 in global sales at the end of the gen will be a small moral victory for Sony fans.

Kinda like the way a huge underdog sports team defies the odds beats the spread, or for our Euro brethren, the way a football team avoids relegation on the very last game of the season.  They don't actually win anything big, but it's a moral victory for their fans.

In my opinion, I think ranking the consoles along first, second, and third place does not tell the whole picture of the competition for this generation. For example, while the Wii has led the generation in hardware sales, it's also important to recognize it's sharp decline, as well as where much of the third-party support focused on.

A reasonable PS3 fan will recognize that no matter how this generation ends up, the 360 managed to hold onto second place for the majority (or all the generation). However, a reasonable 360 fan should also recognize that the PS3 has been in the market for a shorter duration, and managed to sell at a higher rate across its lifetime. Lastly, both fans should recognize that there is currently less than a 1% difference in total hardware sales between the two (according to the information on the front page).

Overall, this has been a very competitive generation, and this doesn't even include all of the gamers on PC, phones, tablets, and so on.

@ ethomaz. Would love to see your YOY breakdown to explain how Ps3 can go from 70 odd million to 115m! For the record i believe the Wii could possibly reach 112m max, possibly more if Nintendo can somehow prolong its life in the developing markets. Wii mini could be the key.

At the current rate its outselling the 360 it would take nearly 2 years for the PS3 to outsell the 360 putting us in late 2014.

Console sales will slow even more next year making it likely PS3 wont pass it until early 2015.

At that point we are firmly into next gen, would it even matter at that point?

Every year I heard it it does make ma laugh 

the ps3 will pass the 360 when the nextbox will come out. it dont matter who is out selling who. both consoles are fun
