Forums - PC Discussion - Building my first PC and would like some input

I havent had the time to keep up with my research due to classes nearing the end. Just wanted to say thanks for the input. I've made a few changes to what i plan To make. I haven't updated the op because of a lack of time and I'm not even at a computer right now. Bought the thq bundle last night since i really wanted SaintRow3. That and Darksiders are just waiting to be played.

You are welcome! Do well on your exams/mid-terms, worry about games after. I wish I was still in school, loved that period time in my life. It seemed very stressful at the time but it really was the most free time I ever had (besides summers). The THQ game bundle now added Dawn of War GOTY :)

GTX660 can be had for $180 after MIR on Newegg:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814500270

GTX660Ti has dropped closer to $250 after MIR:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814162121

I'll re-check for prices on Sunday of this week to see if anything major has changed. I don't remember if you mentioned, but are there a Fry's or MicroCenter stores near you?

There isn't a Frys or MicroCenter in florida, sadly. I think i'm gonna go with the GTX660 unless that 660Ti drops to around 230 next week for some odd reason (hoping to order the part next week.

Or, grab a Radeon 7870 instead and get a free copy of FarCry 3, it would trade blows with the Geforce GTX 660 depending on the game.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150604

Bench:

Just an option to consider anyway.

From what I've been reading, Nvidia seems to be the better company to go with when looking at the long term. With that said, i'm more interested in Far Cry than AC3 and it's slightly cheaper... mmm.

Ya, the 7870 is a good option. I wouldn't use any benchmarks from AnandTech's GPU Bench. Those guys have not retested any of the current generation cards with new drivers. Their entire bench is outdated for both NV and AMD and their GPU bench doesn't reflect scores using Catalyst 12.11 or 310.70 drivers. That website is really dropping the ball on GPU reviews in 2012 because they refuse to retest cards with new drivers like everyone else. Their GPU bench ONLY includes scores from launch reviews - so February~March 2012 for HD7870.

Dgc1808, just keep in mind going in that Far Cry 3 hammers GPUs with everything on max. There are some settings in the game like Post FX, HDAO, Alpha-to-Coverage + MSAA, that kill performance on modern GPUs. Just have a realistic expectation of where you'll end up performance wise in this game.

MSAA+ Alpha-to-Coverage is a giant performance killer in this game.

In terms of long-term, both GTX660/HD7870 will become outdated at a similar pace.  The only sub-$300 card that has a chance of extra life is HD7950 because it has a 20-30% overclocking headroom at which point it can beat/match GTX680/HD7970Ghz.

I wouldn't worry about future-proofing with these $200 GTX660/7870 cards since they are going to be similar to each other, depending on the game, with 7870 having a 5% edge on average. I don't think you'll be able to use MSAA much in future games with either of these so the larger penalty 660 would take under MSAA vs. 7870 may not matter.

If you see something like this drop to $240-250, then it's worth it, especially because you plan to play Skyrim:

i've been looking at a build seriously the last couple of weeks to get in the new year i think i will get 660/660TI ,i5- quad 3570K,16gb ram 1886,coolermaster silencio 650 case, corsair 750 enthusiast psu, corsair h40 hydro cooler, caviar black 1TB WD,this is my full budget, not really sure if i need better PSU/coolers

oh and a asus p8z77-v m/b these are the offers in the build,i could shop around here and there to save a £100 i guess but to be honest it gives me a headache with so much choice

i can't really afford an ssd on top of all of this, just looking for something to take me for a few years

That's a bit dissappointing. Guess I just won't be playing that game on max.

It looks good. The Graphics Card and CPU seem extremely overpriced. I got my AMD FX 4100 CPU for $95 and it has virtually the same specs as that CPU. It's quad-core 3.6 GHz, 4.1 GHz overclock. Actually now that I look at it, that graphics card seems only a little overpriced, but I don't know if you really need dual DVI. I know I don't. Also, I would see if you can find those parts on NewEgg. From my experience, NewEgg offers the better deals than TigerDirect. That's just my preference though.

Have you considered Asrock motherboards? They pack a lot of features for the price, like Asrock Z77 Extreme 3 or 4.

Low end AIO watercooling is weak. Don't buy into the hype of inferior all-in-one watercooling. The only good ones are H80 and H100 and even those get beaten in performance vs. noise levels by the top air coolers like Noctua NH-D14 or Thermalright Silver Arrow. See if you can find Thermalright True Spirit 140, NZXT Havik 140, Zalman CNPS14x Pure Aluminum or Scythe Mugen 3 or something like that for a price similar to the H40. Those are way better, but I don't know what they cost from the stores you are buying. You can drop a link to the stores you are buying from and I can recommend something from there.

If you want a quiet case, maybe also consider the Fractal Design Define R4. It has a front opening door so that if you need more airflow, you can always keep the door open and install 2 fans there. I am personally not a fan of cases with poor airflow for the sake of silence. I like to have 2 front fans taking air in like Corsair Carbide 400R. The Fractal Design R4 is a good compromise I suppose between silence and still having the ability to improve front airflow with the door open.

Can't say if that PSU is a good value since again don't know what the prices for competing PSUs are. Some PSUs are made by top-notch companies and might cost less. For example, XFX Silver rated PSU are all made by SeaSonic which is Tier 1. Those might cost less than your Corsair 750. Corsair makes a lot of different 750 versions too from Bronze to Silver. All of those are made by different companies.

The Asus GTX660Ti for under £230 with 2 free games sounds like a decent deal:

or the Gigabyte GTX660Ti:

The MSI 660Ti is even cheaper than both of those:
