As someone from the UK, from my experience most people aren't really sure about what it is or what it offers, and those that do know don't care about it... with 1 or 2 exceptions.

It was a supply issue. Clearly, Nintendo had a fixed amount of units ready for it's initial shipment, and chose to devote the majority of them to it's largest audience = North America. Now, if Nintendo had 400, 000 units for sale in Europe and only sold 40,000 of them, then you would have a story. It makes sense as to why Nintendo focused on NA with the initial shipment. But, since Europe blew their stock in 48 hours, it's a shame that Nintendo missed an opportunity for more sales there. But, it's not like there aren't more shipments going out to replenish. Btw, I'm sure there were way more than 40,000 Vita's available for sale by comparison.

What people have shown that it is not sold out in the uk? I have been to tesco, asda and gamestation and they are are sold out. They shipped 40k and it has been reported it sold 40k, so like i said what is all the fuss about. Had they shipped 60k they would have sold 60k.

You do realise that they sold 40k because they shipped 40k? Had they shipped more they would have sold more. Not sure how the 360, which has far more stock in stores and which traditionally does very well over xmas selling more than an undershipped console really means much.

More likely Nintendo shipped 50k and sold 40k.

Actually I believe germany and france is where the most demand is. Like I said, either the controller has hindered things or nintendo is just doing it on a demand basis.
One more thing to complete my year = senran kagura localization =D
