I think it was some sort of propietary format that had the same capacity as a Blu-Ray.

Yeah considering the Gamecube and Wii Disc they are probally the same as normal Blu-Ray discs except they are made to be read backwards.
As for some of the other ones who sizes are quit large it more than likely uncompressed media ascets (textures/audio).

Yeah, Panasonic has rights to the Bluray tech and use it anywhere they want, but I doubt Nintendo would like them to call the format with a name so closely related to Sony and Playstation. In any case, the name is not important.
On topic... I think these numbers are not good at all. I mean, it is good to have the space, and it's supposed to save the programmers some works on compression, so they can properly polish their games... but we've seen this is not the case with the U's launch titles. Right now, it just condones the programmers' laziness.
