Probably they're abusing the high read speed of the Wii U's Bluray drive to use uncompressed assets and what not.

Bluray?  Does the Wii U actually have that?

I think it was some sort of proprietary format that had the same capacity as a Blu-Ray.

This.  It's not exactly the same standard design as the drive in a Blu-Ray player (hence why the Wii U cannot play Blu-Ray movies), but it uses a similar blue laser.

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

Yeah considering the Gamecube and Wii Disc they are probally the same as normal Blu-Ray discs except they are made to be read backwards.

As for some of the other ones who sizes are quit large it more than likely uncompressed media ascets (textures/audio).

Yeah, Panasonic has rights to the Bluray tech and use it anywhere they want, but I doubt Nintendo would like them to call the format with a name so closely related to Sony and Playstation. In any case, the name is not important.

On topic... I think these numbers are not good at all. I mean, it is good to have the space, and it's supposed to save the programmers some works on compression, so they can properly polish their games... but we've seen this is not the case with the U's launch titles. Right now, it just condones the programmers' laziness.

Hmm. Some launch games aren't on this list. :/

So ZombiU was a Wii game after all

Do you realize that all of Skyrim fit on a regular size DVD for X360? This is because the game used more advanted technology and procedurally generated graphics instead of giant waste of space art files.

Graphics etc wise ZombiU is akin to Left for Dead games... lot more atmosphere being less of an action game. It doesn't have pre-rendered cutscenes. It is all real-time game presentation. There is no reason for it to be large in size.

Honestly I'm more surprised that NSMBU is 1.7GB since NSMB Wii is only 350MB.

Seems about right to me ...

While it wouldn't (necessarily) be obvious, the Wii U game probably has textures that are several times the size of the Wii game to ensure that the game looks crisp at 720p.

no the difference isn't be that big between the textures. Probably 512x512 for the Wii version and now 1024x1024.
That wouldn't raise the size to 5 times more than the Wii version. Besides the game doesn't consist of only textures, which means that the raw texture size (in bytes) would need to be even more than 5 times to really make sense.

It's likely something else as well, but I just don't see the big gap from NSMBWii and NSMBU
