Forums - PC Discussion - Elite: Dangerous announced as sequel to 1980's space trader - Kickstarter

i remember elite on the BBC and love space games although not really played many on my PC or had a PC long enough to indulge,

but are there not lots of games like this on the PC or are they not like Elite, for some reason i think there are lots of games in space on the PC

There are a few, nothing big budget atm though.
Evochron mercenary is supposed to be like Elite, but I haven't gotten in to it yet. I crashed soon after I finally found a way to start the thrusters.

Elite Dangerous is at 614k dollars now with 8,500 backers, it needs 2 million to get funded. Star citizen is a bit over a million dollars with 9 days left. Seems to be an uphill battle.

Star Citizen is at over $3.1m combined now, they have $2m from the main site.

Elite will make it, guaranteed.

But I find it curious how much they're asking for. $2 million is a lot of money to ask for a crowd funded project. I wonder if it's hubris.

It reminds me of the failed Kickstarter campaign with that old fart who made Pitfall but nothing else in the past 20 years.

He asked for $900 000 to make this:

I dunno, 2 million isn't all that much.
Star Citizen is already at 3m (I forgot about the original funding, thanks Zarx) and they're using it as proof of concept to get extra investor money.

Roberts hopes to raise somewhere between $2 million to $4 million to convince angel investors to fully fund the game.

So 2 million for Elite Dangerous doesn't seem all that much, certainly not if he wants his team of 235 to work on it.

Braben won't say how many people are working on Elite: Dangerous right now because he expects to ramp up staff as the Kickstarter takes shape. But we do know 235 people work for Frontier across two studios, one in the UK, the other in Canada.

It should make it now I see Star citizen raised over 3 million in a month.

Star Citezen has a much better pitch tho, they already have ingame trailers, lots of info, etc. They seem to also have an established plan on how to build the game as well. And they are much more transparent, with their Reddit AMA and the devs are active on the forums.

As a fan of David Crane from 'back in the day', that actually caused me physical pain.

It's still early, but it does seem a bit of a last minute me too reaction to launch Elite Dangerous now. The pitch wasn't well prepared and aiming for a release date 6 months before Star citizen seems a bit of a dick move.

I do have more faith in Star Citizen to become a succesful project, but can't let the chance of a new Elite slip by either. It's a gamble and Elite Dangerous has the worst odds of the projects I have backed so far imo. Anyway David Braben still has almost 2 months to work on his pitch.

I pledged to Star Citizen even though I find the Kickstarter program absolutely silly. The whole idea of asking players to invest 100% of the risk with no return other than seeing the game released really doesn't make sense to me. But that's just how awesome Star Citizen looked and how appealing it was.

This - isn't. I'm not sure how ambitious or big this project will end up once it's released, but it seems like a "cheap" version (even if it isn't). He also doesn't have the most magical video presentation and something about his presentation felt inexperienced, nervous, and lacking true ambition. Maybe he was just super nervous, but if he wants gamers to take 100% of the monetary risk then he needs to do a better job! (Or not, considering how fast it's being funded so far and the fact that it lasts 2 months instead of the usual 1 month.)
