Forums - Nintendo Discussion - will the wii u be able to upscale wii games?

I had a thought last night because i may be selling my wii but keeping my games and periphials incase i get a wii u. Will the wii u make wii games look better in hd? What i mean is in pc games the graphics of the game depend on the computer its being played on. So are wii games the same? Can the wii u make them look better? Aren't the "assets" for wii games in HD just that the wii wasn't really built for HD. Just wondering.

Reggie said that the WiiU won't upscale the Wii games. I don't know if that included display in higher resolution though.

No, it will not upscale Wii games to higher resolutions.

well that sucks. I was hoping.

It has already been aswered that it won't upscale Wii games, but I suspect the reason is that Nintendo (may have) included several Wii components to ensure backwards compatibility.

In theory, Nintendo could probably integrate the CPU, GPU and embedded memory onto a single inexpensive chip and add that chip to the motherboard to ensure 100% backwards compatibility; but that would prevent the possibility of upgrading the graphics.

The alternate approach Nintendo could have taken would be software emulation, which would have made it possible to upscale Wii games to 1080p with some enhancements, but that would have probably prevented 100% compatibility with Wii games.

No, Reggie said this in an interview with Geoff Keighley at E3 last year. This also means no upscaling for 720p Wii U games, as well. So on Xbox 360 when you can select 1080p output for all games, Wii U won't be able to do that. There will be many games that you'll never be able to display in Full HD, unfortunately... unless you have a high-end receiver that can do the upscaling for you.

I vouch 100% for this assessment.

Given that Hollywood and Broadway never reveiced a die shrink in the Wii itself, a die shrink and a comple single die package would make a lot of sense.   And as I understand it, the Project Dolphin people state that writing a TEV emulator is a pain in the ass.

This seems like a bonehead move on Nintendo's part. How difficult is it to increase the internal resolution and output at 720p? A: Its not. All their Wii software sales would go through the roof if the WiiU could play them in HD.

HappySquirrel and I just explained why.

B/C will be hardware based, not software based like PS3/X360.

Yes, and the choice to go that way for B/C is a bonehead move.  I'm also not convinced that B/C is entirely hardware based. Especially since the wiiu is supposed to be cheap at launch, and including hollywood and broadway extra would increase the cost. One reason PS3 was so expensive at launch was because each PS3 had a PS2 inside.  I don't think that is how Nintendo is working their B/C.
