It has already been aswered that it won't upscale Wii games, but I suspect the reason is that Nintendo (may have) included several Wii components to ensure backwards compatibility.

In theory, Nintendo could probably integrate the CPU, GPU and embedded memory onto a single inexpensive chip and add that chip to the motherboard to ensure 100% backwards compatibility; but that would prevent the possibility of upgrading the graphics.

The alternate approach Nintendo could have taken would be software emulation, which would have made it possible to upscale Wii games to 1080p with some enhancements, but that would have probably prevented 100% compatibility with Wii games.
