Forums - Gaming Discussion - Original Silent Hill developer disappointed at "poor" HD re-release

Eurogamer

A key member of the original Silent Hill trilogy development team has expressed his disappointment at the state of the impending HD re-release of SH2 and 3.

As reported by Destructoid, Masahiro Ito, who served as art director on the first three Silent Hill games, was asked to comment via Twitter on comparison shots of the PS2 original next to the new HD version. In the images, missing fog textures have exposed unfinished sections of the environment.

"Left side is HD, isn't it? It's poor," he wrote. "It's really a released version? Really?"

When the follower who originally posed the questioned confirmed that the image was indeed from the retail disc, Ito simply replied "OMG!"

He later added that Konami should "release a patch for HD collection, I think," before speculating that the problem might be caused by PlayStation 3 tech.

"I guess that it was a problem of PS3. PS3 has a weak point for using 'translucent texture'," he wrote.

"But PS2 has no such a weak point, and original SH2/SH3 use so many 'translucent texture'. Example, for fog/mist."

Take a look at the screenshots in question below.

The Silent Hill HD Collection launched in the US earlier this month and follows in Europe on 29th March.

Which side is the HD re-release? They both look like shit.

I'm glad I picked up Downpour instead of the collection. I'll hang on to my ps2 versions instead.
Sotc uses plenty of translucent textures too without any trouble and has way more going on then SH3. What the heck did they do to it.

I could imagine this conversation , Silent Hill HD producer , "this looks like shit get rid of the god damn fog "
Staff, "but it's there for atmosphere" Producer "don't be silly did you see any fog in Resident Evil 5 and that was so scary a ninja like me had to play it with the lights on ".

Research shows Video games  help make you smarter, so why am I an idiot

So no SH4, No original SH3 VA, crappy Framerate, "inferior" graphics, Censorship, ect... I think I'll just stick to the original games (I have 1-4)

God, you'd think all the main developers of the games would be apart of the HD port process.
The HD collection & Downpour come out on the same day, I'll be sure to not bother with the old ones and stick to the new Silent Hill instead.

LOL! same question I asked

Ito actually isn't the original developer, Keiichiro Toyama is, although Ito is one of the key original team members.

Still, I agree 100%, and the Silent Hill HD Collection on both the PS3 and 360 became the first two Silent Hill purchases that not only disappointed me beyond repair, but have both been been returned/traded-in since. Konami let a lot of it's fans like myself down.

Is it that bad? That you tried both HD console versions but returned them?

I still want to buy it though.

Enough with the damn HD re-releases. If the lazy fucks want to make a buck off of the old games, remake them from scratch. All the HD versions seem to do is expose the flaws of the old games and in many cases, make them look and play worse than the original games. Also, game publishers seem to know NOTHING about compilations. Typically, either all the titles in the series would be included, or only a few would be included STARTING WITH THE FIRST TITLE. At least this is the standard for DVD movie compilations. Could you imagine getting the matrix trilogy, or the Nightmare on Elm Street collector's pack and not being able to find the first movie? It would be unacceptable. Yet, in the games industry, it's perfectly acceptable to do that.

Also, having played through both versions extensively, the PS3 version performed worse, MUCH worse with Silent Hill 3, while the 360 version wasn't as sharp as the PS3 version, especially Silent Hill 2, which was a deal blurrier on the system than Sony's. Both versions have also had their Pyramid Head "rape scenes" censored (an iconic scene), and to me, that's just unacceptable given what it did for the series.

If I were to recommend either version, it would be the 360 version, but if you truly want a fix for Silent Hill this month, pick up the awesome Downpour and ignore both Collections!

How does Downpour compare to the rest of the series? Reviews have been pretty poor, but you know, can't trust journalists these days.
