Kojima says Wii U a 'special case,' requires 'unique' software

Kojima Productions' Project Ogre is still a bit mysterious, other than it running on the Fox Engine and dealing with heavy subject matter. One thing we can say, though, is that the game probably won't hit Wii U. Studio head Hideo Kojima recently commented that if he makes a Wii U game, it will be tailored to the device.

"Wii U is kind of a special case," Kojima said via translator at a press Q&A last week. "The way the player interacts with the device is very different than any other device out there. So if I were to make a game for the Wii U, it would have to be a unique game."

That's not to say that the Fox Engine itself is incompatible with the Wii U, though. Kojima was careful to couch his remarks by pointing out that his new game engine is flexible. "I don't want any misconceptions that [the Fox Engine] is specific to a certain hardware platform, because it's not," he said. "The way we envision it, it's more this platform that isn't mounted to a particular hardware."

The excuses begin already.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

What can I say... If there ever was a Captain Obvious competition, I'd place my bet on this guy.

It's that hard putting an inventory or mini map on the Wii U controller screen huh...

I'm just curious as to what happens when we want to play Wii U games on the Wii U controller itself as advertised? More specifically games that are heavily reliant on what's displayed on the controller during gameplay.

Isn't this basically what Crystal Dynamics said concerning Tomb Raider on WiiU?

Developers said the same thing about Wii, too. Didn't really seem to matter much when the game actually came out. Most of them were just regular games with waggle controls added in that most people didn't/don't like.

Excuse not to make a wii u game because he thinks more effort is needed. Can't wait to hear more devs say this so that I can confirm to never get the wii u period as it may turn out to be a repeat of the wii's game drought crisis.

i doesn't have to be unique at all, it just has to use buttons, as with HD consoles...

don't mind my username, that was more than 10 years ago, I'm a different person now, amazing how people change ^_^

Why is everyone saying he won't make a game for wiiu?
It looks like simply that one game won't be ported over because it doesn't make sense to.

Of course, maybe that's the problem, because people see it as just a normal console with a touchscreen on the pad, but I don't see it as such myself. It really does lend itself to new ideas. Kojima is a guy who tends to think differently, using some mgs bosses as evidence. I can't imagine he wouldn't be interested, just that, for example, when he made metal gear solid, he wanted to make full use of the features, thus giving us interesting fights like psycho mantis, and dialog based on our memory card save files.
I couldn't imagine a kojima game where he just releases something that is mgs without all the cool features of the console the way that mgs uniquely does. MGS without those features is just splinter cell or syphon filter.

I'm looking forward to a wiiu kojima game. Can't wait to see what kind of ideas he'd bring to the table.
