The Japan graph looks troubling, and with no major software titles planned....I expect a price cut for the PSV which will hurt Sony....again. Nintendo was smart selling the 3DS at $250 and then cutting the price to what they actually wanted to sell it for just before the PSV launched.

Yup, Nintendo's strategy was ingenious. They are making insane amounts of profits this fiscal year, because the 3DS will have shipped about 15m units during this period.

I'm glad I'm not the only one to notice what Nintendo did with the 3DS.

...

Still PSV has a chance to do well. 360 and PS3 started off pretty slow, and now they are doing alright. 3DS might have some struggle time end of life because of the relatively low level graphics (that and some phones nowdays are 3D too!).

One of the advantages PS3 and 360 have over Vita is that they always had each other (aww). The user base was doubled for the big games.

Vita is alone. If a third party does a big game for it, it's for it only!

Excellent point, but I still like to think the PSV has a chance.

I don't think the 3DS can match DS's sales given that it's already selling at an affordable and reasonable price, and that 5 years down the road, those PS2/GCN level graphics might not be enough.

...

Also PSV has PS3 to be with for now.

I don't think the reasons are those you said... maybe a little bit, but the most important reason of why 3ds doesn't have a chance to outsell DS is piracy. I can't even imagine the amount of DSs that were sold due to piracy. In my country, almost all. And 3ds lacks this "selling power".

But the thing is...Nintendo isn't making profit

How do you know that?

Even if they aren't I'm sure they can sell the 3DS at $170 for a long long while, in a couple years with a redesign and lower production costs, they will profit. Also I refuse to believe Mario Kart and Super Mario aren't raking in the millions....

Well, it takes a great mind to understand Nintendo's masterplan.

...

PSV and PS360 isn't a comparable scenario. The PS3 was promised great third party support and when it failed everything went multiplatform, so the 360 benefitted as well. The PSV has nothing really big on the horizon except for inferior versions of PS360 games. The 3DS is powerful enough to run the games that the majority of Japanese developers want to make and Western publishers would like to see handhelds die, so the one and only company that has to save the PSV from irrelevance is Sony. Whether they do it with price cuts, first party games, moneyhatting third parties for exclusives or a combination of the aformentioned is their choice. Although given the 3DS's lead, they'll have to do all three.

This is true, but it could all change with some support from CAPCOM and a good PSV exclusive Monster Hunter. We will have to wait until Captivate..

Lol! Give it time, not one system yet has been piracy proof.

The 3DS's life isn't set in stone yet. There are many ways to improve its sales. Redesigns, colors, special editions, new IPs, established IPs the DS never had, merging the 3DS's and Wii's Virtual Console, officially launching the system in more countries. I also doubt that the system will be forever safe from pirates.

Price and processing power really shouldn't be obstacles. The DS sold at the same price for years (even raised it later on in its life) and cutting edge graphics aren't required for handheld gaming (otherwise the DS would have tanked).

Yes I know, all those factors will help a lot - especially redesign, which I have a lot of faith - even if people will bitch like never before when they see no 2nd analog pad. But I think piracy levels on consoles are becoming harder and harder by the day to a point of irelevancy - it'll be too hard to pirate to bother - like on the ps3. The DS was probably hacked on its launch week and even a 8 year kid could do it.

The only way to overcome this is to believe the conspiracy theories that manufacturers simply turn off a switch and allow piracy at some point in a system's life time, but I just don't think that's true.

It would be incredibly stupid of Nintendo to buy Monster Hunter 4 exclusivity only to allow some other MH game to be made for the PSV, so I wouldn't hold my breath. Final Fantasy and Metal Gear Solid are up for grabs though, so maybe Sony can convince Square-Enix or Konami to make a big exclusive for a system that will take a long time to hit the two million mark in Japan.

Konami has always been faithful to Sony, a PSV exclusive PSV is a given, but it won't help sales much...

I guess with MH4 as a 3DS exclusive, is PSV's life set in stone? Is it a dead system?

Maybe for PS4, Sony won't go graphical whoring...their best consoles had the worse graphics of the gen, and focused on games.

I think Sony is willing to pay even more than Nintendo for this game. MH is no longer an investment for Sony, it's a strategical decision. They should pay what they can to have it, no matter how much money will be lost. Even Nintendo can't cover the price a desperate company is willing to pay for something it needs.
