Forums - Gaming Discussion - Fez's dev to Japanese dev At GDC: "Your games just suck"...Japanese Developer Leaves GDC

Sounds like a total douche to me. But if the question is "are Japanese games as good as they used to be?" then the honest answer is no. I love Japanese games (look at avatar), jrpg's and fighting games then i'm all over it!

BUT

Some of them have been a huge let down. Square Enix have struggled this gen to capture their form of the previous gen. Western devs have definatly started to takeover in those genres. Games like Skyrim/Fallout/Mass Effect etc are by far better rpg's then what has been released in Japan.

Imagine if Square Enix released a third person Final Fantasy in the style of Skyrim. A fully interactive open world. Then imagine they added in a good/bad system that changes the world like in Mass Effect. That game would be epic!

But the games just seem so far away from that. They seem stuck in their ways. They have not evolved.

So while the guy is a complete twat and should be shot I do think that if the guy can't handle criticism then maybe shouldn't be in a place like that to begin with. If you ask someone that question then you have to be prepared for someone having a negative view.

They suck, because many are trying to follow Western footsteps, and they lose their magic, while not capturing the (not as interesting) western appeal.

It's hard to argue with him overall, that Japanese industry has taken a huge hit in my opinion. The sales aren't there, the praise isn't there, but the nostalgia is as strong as ever. It's unfortunate that Nintendo is really the only company to have a grasp on quality games and keep in line with consistency. I think he's being blunt because he feels like he has to, if you feel like the games suck overall, then you should say it.

I could argue all day, it's his opinion fine but to bluntly throw that out there isn't constructive, Japan has had a decline in it's software sales but the quality is still there if you want to find it. If he feels so strongly about all this and i would say he does with a statement like that then he should explain himself and offer advice to where he thinks they've gone wrong not just tell them there crap

Maybe I'm reading wrong but didn't he?

"Others looked on awkwardly as the Japanese developer was then subjected to a string criticisms about game design flaws in his native country. The developer nevertheless thanked the panel for their response and returned to his seat."

If Japanese games have a problem, it's because of douchebags like him convincing Japanese devs that their games need to be more "Western."

Wow, what an arrogant prick.

I don't see the big problem with JPN titles though. Why is it that everyone thinks all games need to be like Western styled games? So much of this stuff is so over rated to begin with.

^this.

and once again, the west is beeing represented by assholes..

even if Fish does dislike japanese Games, this is no acceptable way saying it, because said games arent bad just because you cant stand them, and especially as a developer, you should know better.

I'm a Foreigner, and as such, i am grateful for everyone pointing out any mistakes in my english posted above - only this way i'll be able to improve. thank you!

Team Meat and the Fez dev seem to have a lot in common.

A lot of these so-called Indie developers, really. Rovio would also fall in there.

Let's not forget that many of the faded Japanese titles this gen have actually been western developed. IE Silent Hill, Front Mission, Dead Rising, Splatter House, Bionic Commando, Golden Axe, Devil May Cry (Although not out yet, will most likely sell less than DMC4) etc

Just saying...

hope this guy doesn't get offered the oppertunity to attend this kind of conference again he's an embarressment to the industry

Absolutely, and it gives Westerners a bad name as well.  I've lived overseas, and I know firsthand that all it takes is one bad apple to make the rest of 'em look just as rotten.  Any experience with someone of a different culture gives you an impression of that other culture in general.  Too bad Mr. Fish is too immature and egotistical to realize this.

Nintendo is simply excluded because they managed to keep the quality. Same is true (to a slightly lesser extent) for Capcom. But then ?
Some very popular and critically acclaimed Japanese gaming series are dying in case of sales, quality or even both.

Pro Evolution Soccer
Final Fantasy
Kingdom Hearts
Tekken
Soul Calibur
Dragon Ball Z fighting games

Well you get the idea.

I remember the days when Pro Evo ruled the roost, no other football game came close. Man, things sure have changed!

That's pathetic really. Japan is the basis of all Video Games, if it weren't for them the game market would have never of been so evolved as it is now. Very ignorant of him.
