Forums - Sony Discussion - Another Source claims SONY will abandon the Cell, "Esssentially a PC"

Rumor: PlayStation 4 “essentially a PC”
To abandon the cell processor.
by Sal Romano [@salromano] at 01:45 PM EST, March 1, 2012 .

The PlayStation 4 is “essentially a PC,” in terms of its “technological make-up,” according to a Digital Foundry source.

It will move away from the Cell processor in favor of “an AMD collaboration on the CPU,” which could mean the console utilizes an x86 processor.

A Kotaku rumor published yesterday falls directly in line with Digital Foundry’s claim, which also said Sony would abandon the Cell processor for PlayStation 4.

And their next console "essentially being a PC" is what will pull in the most money for them, even if they do have to get rid of backwards compatibility with the PS3 (PS1 and PS2 backwards compatibility is inevitable).

lol if they go AMD they'll have another overhyped disappointment. Sony probably chose this when AMD were promising Bulldozer would be competitive.

At least if it's Fusion the graphics will be better integrated than a GPU thrown in at the last minute like PS3.

theoretical PS4 should be cheaper since its sounds like over the counter stuff right?

Wait an X86 processor?

this would mean the ram is likely a max of 2GB

Currently playing: MAG, Heavy Rain, Infamous

Getting Plat trophies for: Heavy Rain, Infamous, RE5,  Burnout and GOW collection once I get it.

Why do people keep saying this, backwards compatibility is still easily done, sony will NOt do that again.

No.................

Well, i think this could turn out pretty good.... i mean, Microsoft essentially partnered with AMD with the 360 too (in regards of the graphicschip), and this piece'a sheat, made in 2005, still throws out some amazing things!

And with AMD not beeing overly successful, Sony might get alot of bang for the buck.

Sure. An AMD processor emulating the PS3 cell processor. Even Better: An AMD processor that turned out to be subpar in performance emulating the PS3 cell processor. I believe you....

Umm no, you have no idea how software works... This is easily done through emulation. Sony will NOT make PS4 non backwards compatible.
