I don't think some of the people on this site realize the power. We could solve millions of problems that we have been trying to figure out for 1,000s of years. Maybe even get the answer on how to make us evolve and become more efficient. Questions like how to live longer and maybe even become immortal. Cure disease and many, many things. This, if used for good, will be our answer to the stars and beyond. I always wanted to travel in space, Not only would this be able to solve hunger, Poverty, health, science, energy, enviromental problems. The list goes on and on that this could accomplish in the right hands. I'm stoked as well but scared as well.

THIS! RIGHT HERE! This is LITERALLY what this is all going to cause, and more importantly, its going to happen in OUR LIFETIMES! But as you said, I'm scared as well, because the question is what happens when this is used for military purposes and whatnot.

You guys have lost your minds.

The prospect is simply a significant jump in computing power. That's it.

This will NOT solve hunger (are you insane), poverty, health or environmental problems.

Not to mention that it's very possible that they will run into a brick wall. Unfortunately the academic world (and I speak from experience here) is mainly governed by the neverending quest for funding. That's what they're doing here...Professor so-and-so want more PhD students so they get funding for research and then they get prestige and money from that.

Still, would it have the ability to do folding at a rate much much faster than what is possible now? It could cure cancer faster than PS3.

Can you please tell me how a faster processor will cure cancer?

Because last time I checked we're still shooting tumors with neutrons/protons (and by we I mean me), putting radioactive substances in the skin or giving them the good 'ol chemo.

A big leap in processing is great news, but we'll probably find new problems that require another magnitude of processing power. Maybe not so great news for the gaming industry, already moaning it costs too much to fully utilize today's hardware.

I wonder if quantum computing can make true holographic displays a reality, since those require a insane amount of processing.

Also good news for the environment I guess since when it's all working these quantum computers should only need a fraction of the energy to run compared to today's 100 to 500 watt systems. (If they can solve that problem of needing the world's most powerful freezers)

Btw what happened to photonic computing. I thought that was to be the next big step in computers.

Holograms can be calculated using hogels to decrease processing so the only real problem is making a holographic video itself. Autostereoscopic solutions are way more realistic.

Making holographic video has been done. Autosterescopic 3D will always have the problem with the focus point being wrong.

Um not really, unless you are ok with a .1 fps display. I'm not sure how much you actually know but the second point is blatantly wrong.

I read most of it. Totally beyond me what it is all about. What does it actually mean? What will soon be possible and why are they at a tipping point?
None the less, still very exciting times!

Imagine computing and processing at a speed which was previously though unfathomable. For example, a single Quantum Computer could do an entire years worth of Simulation Folding on a multitutde of current supercomputers for something like Cancer in a matter of an hour, or maybe even less. This will advance and change technology and science in a way that the average person can't even begin to understand. This opens up countless doors into a totally different world devoid of disease and plentiful in prosperity for example. The potential is staggering, however scary at the same time, the question is what this kind of power will be used for when it comes to fruition. I also embedded a video in the OP to further shed light on the concepts.

"world devoid of disease and plentiful in prosperity "

You are living a life of illusion my friend. Wake up and smell reality.

Amen Dr. Weed... I mean Dr. Grass.

A world plentiful in prosperity equals a world without greed. Unless this "invention" ( or breakthrough ) cures mankind's greed or it's love of warfare and the instruments of war, what world of prosperity?

OT: Almost everthing under the sun, natural or man-made, can be use for the good of mankind and at the same time for the ill of mankind. It's not rocket science.

Everything is a gun.

This technology in "good hands" can do wonders, in the "wrong hands" ..... you go figure.

This computing power sounds like a hackers dream.

This.

Dr. Grass seems to be only one with logic here. This is a powerful supercomputer, not an all-problems-solving wonder. It might really need to cancer cure, or technological advancements, but it won't magically wipe away all problems of mankind.

Russia is still buiding more weapons than ever, the corrupt regime of Syria still kills people,  and the PS Vita is still doomed.

updated: 14.01.2012

playing right now: Xenoblade Chronicles

Hype-o-meter, from least to most hyped:  the Last Story, Twisted Metal, Mass Effect 3, Final Fantasy XIII-2, Final Fantasy Versus XIII, Playstation ViTA

bet with Mordred11 that Rage will look better on Xbox 360.

There is a Folding@home program on PS3 that you have set to run at all times and it relays the info back to these guys.

iPhone = Great gaming device. Don't agree? Who cares, because you're wrong.

Currently playing:

Final Fantasy VI (iOS), Final Fantasy: Record Keeper (iOS) & Dragon Quest V (iOS)

Got a retro room? Post it here!

Wow that's quite cool. Another Stanford division eh. I'm using so much of their resources. Evidently it's a real academic powerhouse.

Nevertheless, the point still stands that the computing aspect of these researches are not the main hurdle. Given unlimited processing power the advances made won't infinitely speed up. This should be plain as day to anyone who's done research using complicated programs and powerful comptuers.

Just because a computer is a single machine doesn't mean it can't affect things like science, medicine and even economics. I mean hell, it could do the job of all PS3's connected to Folding at Home for a year in a day or less possibly! It won't change the world instantly, but it will speed things up a lot.
