Forums - General Discussion - Japanese company announces plans to build a 20,000 mile high space elevator by 2050

Wasn't this done in 3001 (the book)? The elevator was made out of diamond I think.

Anyway, that's crazy! And apparently the total length of the cable would be 60k miles! the Earth would look weird with a stick 8 times longer than its diameter sticking out...

I dont think the way the earth looks from outside is anyones real concern.

There could be huge benefits of such structures, including the colonization of the moon for resource mining, it would also make a trip to mars more feasible. And eventually from mars to jupiters moons.

It will assure the survival of the human race, at least until we can figure out how to do hydrogen fusion. At wich point we can survive without the SUN... not sure how we will move on from there though. unless we use planets/moons as giant space ships! lol

Maybe when andromeda collides we will see some aliens pass by. xD

Its progress happening. I'm just sad we probably wont be here to see it.

I'm not against the idea, I know my OCD aesthetical concerns are the last thing that matter, lol.

the maintenance has to be very cheap for such an elevator^^ i will open a company now specialized for space elevator repairs and maintenance. i've heard it's always good to be the first on the market so they have to give my company the assignment.

Yay, Space Elevator! Now we just need two more, and connect all three to make ring around the earth.

(Also the best game to tag is Civilization.....)

if that thing ever falls it will almost wrap around the earth anyway

I wouldnt want to be on that thing when that happens....great another reason to add to my fears of heights along with airplanes ~.~

But in this case, wouldnt you die from being exposed to the wild terrain of space before you fall to death XD!?

if this thing falls, wrapping around the earth, i would not only worry about being on it but also in it's path of destruction.

actually the article said it's going to be much longer then 20.000 miles, so it will wrap around the earth twice

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

they just played ff 13-2 and thought it was a cool idea.

This tower idea reminds me A LOT of Tales of Symphonia on the GameCube.

I get to be Zelos!

Syndicate Wars!!!

TGS, Third Grade Shooter: brand new genre invented by Kevin Butler exclusively for Natal WiiToo Kinect. PEW! PEW-PEW-PEW!

That would be the long-term fix to solar power as well. Unshielded, direct-from-the-sun radiation

It could at least make the elevator itself self-sufficient in terms of energy.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

Hope it works out. The country 1st to get the elevator will dominate the next century in economics.

nah, i would give that to the first fusion reactor.
unlimmited clean energy? yes please, a space elevator is nothing unless there is commerce in space, which there isn't much of if any atm.

anyways
2050 seems like a pretty long ways away at the rate technology increases i would expect it sooner.

This. Especially considering the huge jumps we make with Nano technology.
