Forums - Sales Discussion - How close will PS3/X360 come to lifetime Wii sales?

the difference will be just above 20m in the end, they are closing in at a very slow rate, and with the announcement of newer hardware their sales will drop

The rate at which the 360 and PS3 outsell the Wii will not remain flat, that's a pretty unrealistic assumption. One must consider that the PS3 and 360 are displaying relatively stable sales trends; the PS3 has the potential to gain greatly from further price cuts; the Wii is currently trending downward at a rapid pace; and the WiiU entering the market before its competitors. I'd have to arrive to the conclusion that the only thing that could possibly prevent the PS3 from not only closing the gap, but overtaking the Wii entirely, would be the release of the PS4 within a year of the WiiU. That being said, if this likely scenario does occur, the PS3 will likely receive support along the same lines as the PS2 did allowing the system to continue to sell beyond the PS4's launch. The 360 may suffer the same fate as the original Xbox post 360 launch. Taking this all into account I'd have to estimate the total life to date hardware sales for the seventh generation consoles to look something like:

Wii - 110 million

PS3 - 100 million

360 - 85 million

I wonder how long fanboys will continue to bleat the so-called "Wii dominance"?

think this all depends on what Sony and M$'s next move are, i think if MS announces a new Xbox then the 360 will get to about 86million units but i can't see Sony announcing anything yet.
i think sony will actually slim the PS3 this year and do a nice price cut while Nint and M$ will focus on the new systems so LT i think:

Wii - 112mil
PS3- 100mil
360 - 86mil

(but thats being very optimistic considering we are reaching the closing of this gen)

EDIT: basically bouzane's numbers

Your reasoning doesn't match your figures, you have 360 only selling 4m more than Wii until they both die.

X360 won't suffer the same fate as Xbox either, people really need to do their homework on that one, MS had no choice but to kill that console due to problems with nvidia.

15 million gap both.

In favour of PS3 and 360.

Hype-o-meter, from least to most hyped:  the Last Story, Twisted Metal, Mass Effect 3, Final Fantasy XIII-2, Final Fantasy Versus XIII, Playstation ViTA

bet with Mordred11 that Rage will look better on Xbox 360.

I think it really depends on when the successors to both are launched and how the transitions are handled. Microsoft pretty much abandoned the Xbox when the 360 turned up, and if they do that again then I think the 360 will stop gaining on the Wii one the Nextbox is released. If that happens within the next 18 months, then I think the 360 will top out at around 90m units, while I can't see the Wii passing 110m. If Microsoft continues to support the 360 well for an extra year or so, I think it'll get to 95-100m.

PS3 could pass the Wii eventually if it markets the PS3 as well as it did the PS2 once their successors are/were released. I mean, there's a small chance that even the PS2 may outsell the Wii in one of the years ahead the way things are going.

One problem that the 360 faces is that further price cuts will likely do little to increase hardware sales considering the current, "mass-adoption" price point. That being said, dropping support for legacy hardware is a common business practice that serves Nintendo well as opposed to Sony and Sega who witnesseed their own products competing with one another. It is all but impossible to determine Microsoft's strategy but I would not be surprised if the 360 suffered the same fate as the original Xbox and was discontinued entirely upon the Trinity / Delta launch. I guess I should revise my numbers slightly:

Wii - 105-110

PS3 - 100-105

360 - 85-90

No reason to doubt that both the PS3 and Xbox360 will continue to receive support well past the next gen releases. Both of them will sell well for a long while and receive games. So I think they are both in with a shot but it would be a long shot.

Can't you just comment in a civislised manner? You post like this in nearly every thread ...

I think the wii will hit 125-140.. If nintendo removed wii-u backwards compatibility like sony.. more.. (but that will not happend)

PS3 and 360 will proberly hit around 100 mill each... So i would think wii will win this gen with about 25-40 mill..

But remember.. sony's (mayby) 100 mill. was only becurse they payed peple to buy.. and lost billions of money.. that makes it even worse for sony, that they still end up last.. ( and It's a business term now.. don't do a sony)
