Forums - Sony - Sony says PS4 launching too long after competitor "Undesirable"!

Well we all knew the leak earlier this year that suggested Sony would roll out PS4 within 18-months. Well many have shrugged these reports off it would appear Sony is indeed looking to launch PS4 sooner rather then later. Putting the whole 2014 thing to rest Sony's European branch has come out and commented.

PlayStation Europe boss Jim Ryan said “I think we would consider it undesirable to be significantly later than the competition [with the next PlayStation].” With WiiU launching in 2012 and the next Xbox coming within the 2012 fiscal year (Likely not confirmed) or latest winter 2013. Sony will not wait a year or longer as they did with PS3.

Edge reports that Guerilla Games is working on a next generation PlayStation title. The studio hinted via Guerrilla studio recruiter Adrian Smith that it might be Killzone 4 saying "we've got to continue the Killzone franchise." Steven Ter Heide from KZ 2,3 is reportedly game director.

With the rumors starting to come out that dev kits are getting into developers hands and that Sony's internal studios are shifting focus it seems increasingly doubtful that a 2014 launch is plausible. Eurogamer mentions that many Microsoft next Xbox games in development by third parties are expected to launch in 2013, making the 2012 release date not set in stone. However a 2012 launch does appear unlikely because Sony is lagging behind its competitors WiiU is launching in fall 2012 and has had up to 2 or so years of software development. Microsoft has been working on games for the next Xbox since 2008. Sony only now shifting to game making and getting third parties involved shows they are likely lagging far behind.

But Sony's European boss is amendment, Sony does not want to give their competitors a head start.  Jim Ryan was apparently refering to the head start Microsoft had over Sony last generation when he made his comments. If that is the case then we can expect at earliest a Spring 2013 release and latest a fall 2013 release.

Sony's boss did defend the position suggesting PS3 gamers will not be forgotten and neither will the PS3 platform. "If you look at PlayStation 2, now in excess of 150m units installed globally, a huge majority of that was done at price points of £120 or lower. [With PS3] we've only just hit £199 in the UK, so clearly there's a considerable untapped part of the market there."Adding "There's still a lot of unfinished business on PS3."

If Sony's PlayStation European boss isn't completely making stuff up this would suggest Sony is working very hard to get PS4 ready to market. With the leak earlier this year suggesting 18-months till release a 2012 release date is possible, however more then likely it will come in early 2013. An E3 2012 unveiling is almost certain.

What are your thoughts is Jim Ryan insane is Sony not going to launch within a year of their competitor, or will Sony still launch in 2014 as many have suggested? When saying competitor is Sony considering Nintendo their competitor or are they only referring to Microsoft?  Originally Sony said Wii was not a competitor but not to long ago they changed that tune. Whats your take on this statement?

Having given Microsoft a year's head start in the current generation, PlayStation Europe boss Jim Ryan said it would be "undesirable" for PS4 to repeat that for the next-generation.

Speaking to Eurogamer TV this afternoon at a press event for PlayStation Vita in London, Ryan, who stepped up to the SCEE top job in the summer, said: "I think we would consider it undesirable to be significantly later than the competition [with the next PlayStation]."

With Wii U out next year and Microsoft expected to reveal the next Xbox in 2012 amid suggestions that a number of studios are already making games for a 2013 launch, industry chatter regarding a PlayStation 3 successor has been considerably more muted.

This, coupled with Sony's overall financial position, has led to speculation that the company is behind its rivals with its next-generation planning.

Ryan defended Sony's strategy, insisting: "There's still a lot of unfinished business on PS3."

He added: "If you look at PlayStation 2, now in excess of 150m units installed globally, a huge majority of that was done at price points of £120 or lower. [With PS3] we've only just hit £199 in the UK, so clearly there's a considerable untapped part of the market there."

Last week Edge reported that a first-party Sony studio had ceased PS3 development and moved onto PS4 development. The unnamed developer is also apparently involved in building the graphics technology for Sony's next system.

It then said Guerrilla Games was making a new Killzone game - for PlayStation 4?

Essentially without all the pointless speculation...

So that makes sense, and it is really quite obvious

lol Seece, lets ask you how you think my interpretation differs from what was said? Also I did provide the source for a reason so everyone could see exactly what was said. My so called interpretation is to encourage discussion and I in no way bent the facts. I'd like to know what exactly was wrong with my OP? I mean I realize you don't like me but it is sorta funny that you would make a comment like this.

Plus I was recently asked why I don't just copy and paste the articles, rather I create an original post based on the news. Fact is anyone can copy and paste an article a moron can copy and paste an article. The children in pre-school can copy and paste an article. Why would anyone want to read my threads if they were just copied from somewhere else.

Sorry but my interpretation and insight into the matters which I add for conversational value and journalistic value. This adds to the conversation and legitimacy of the thread and topic. Plagiarism is not something I do.

Anyways I did provide the source for a reason, my OP didn't stretch anything out just sought to explain things and encourage dialogue. Which I am very sure it will, so thank you for your plagiaristic concern but I don't copy others I actually create new discussions and report legit unique news. If you want to read the Eurogamer article click the source, or better yet leave VGChartz and just read Eurogamer. People come to VGChartz forum to discuss not to read the latest news from Eurogamer. It would be interesting if VGChartz actually broke a story like this but for the time being if you want Eurogamer go to Eurogamer if you want the source go to the source. But I am never going to plagerize or copy and paste, I actually contribute to the discussion.

I don't know if it does, didn't bother to read it. I know in general your posts send me and others to sleep and when you announce news not everyone thinks highly of your opinion so you should just post the news and put your opinion under it. I'm not reading anything under this sentance either

Of course it is "undesirable" to launch after your competitors, the thing is, MS will (probably) launch the next xbox late 2012, and IMO, Sony is not prepared to launch this early. If they release in 2012, MS is going after the Wii audience while maintaining the hardcore relationship they built, not allowing the Wii U to be alone on the market.

Once again I say the problem with the PS3 was not that it came 1 year after the 360, the problem was that Sony didn´t show a superior machine. The machine was cool, the experts said that it was a superior console, but the GAMES didn´t show that.

My predictions says that Xbox will do everything to release the next Xbox in 2012 and go hard in the paint with kinect 2.0 and go after the huge casual market, while still being a hardcore machine with Halo, Forza, Gears, etc.
If this doesn´t happen and MS releases it in 2013, then it is pretty easy to predict that Sony will release the console right after.

I think it is pretty set in stone that Sony will release PS4 in mid to late 2013, the next xbox is the wild card.

I'm with Seece on this one! You're just trying to hard Joelcool, take a break.. you are at a point where people are clicking on your threads and think.. "damn it's from Joelcool, I'm skipping this one"

look you shouldn't be commenting on someones interpretation if you don't actually read it. As for not everyone thinks highly of my opinion, no not everybody does. Neither do they yours I mean one of my recent threads here on VGChartz was used by Google Financial on their stock analysis site. It seems that it was the fourth most important article if you go by their list. I also had over 100k readers when I worked for my local news paper and sure I got complaints but had a lot of support.

Listen as I said, if you want Eurogamer go to Eurogamer. If you want my interpretation and my article and thread visit it on VGChartz. Considering your a writer here I'd think you would know this stuff before me anyways, considering your actually employed to report the news and I am just doing it for fun while I wait for my next job or the launch of my own site.

Anyways your a writer, you know nobody reads articles that lack any speculation. Look at all the gaming news 80% of its is interpretation. Every interview every news article it is all interpretation. In fact Eurogamers source is intepretation. You gotta get used to it, I'm sure more then half your articles you write are also interpretation of news.
