Forums - General - Rioting in State College, PA. Occupy? No: it's Football

Specifically the firing of longtime Penn State coach Joe Paterno over the fact that he was made aware of child sexual abuse conducted by his underling (Defense Coordinator assistant coach) Jerry Sandusky back in 2002, supposedly reported the information higher up but never called the actual police over it, and now that the whole thing is unraveling the Penn State board of trustees moved to fire him.

The riots are in support of Joe Paterno, and this makes me lose quite a bit more faith in humanity than any of the Occupy shenanigans.

Apparently all sorts of alumni are rallying in support of him. :/

It's just a game, folks!

f-that. He should be fired.

He should have went to his boss, then the police.

If his boss is still there, he should be fired as well.

Hell, potentially they should both be arrested for failing to report the crimes.

i dont think this has anything to do with the actual game.

I meant "it's just a sport," i know it has nothing to do with any one game in particular

but this isnt about football... it may be his job but this isnt about the sport.  its about people and their connection to this person... they like and respect this individual...

Because of the game. If he were just as nice a guy, but a professor, no one would give a rat's ass

Given what he has done (or, rather, hasn't done), that is exactly the problem.

Well, I do that, too. It is a well documented fact that pop music turns you into a pedophile-loving shit-for-brains, and besides, heavy metal is the law!

It may well be that this is because Paterno is such a Penn State institution and not expressly because it's football related, but it's hard not to notice that sports and rioting seem to go hand in hand. Whatever the reason, the outpouring of support for him (to say nothing of the rioting itself) is fucking cracked.

How can they support the guy? He saw a grown man molesting a young boy in the shower and didn't make sure something was done about it.
