In news that will shock no-one, Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter has once again made a statement that most gamers could have made a year ago. Okay, that's being a bit harsh on the man, it is his job after all. This time, his statements were made to IndustryGamers and pertained to two of the largest video game franchises in history, Grand Theft Auto and Call of Duty:
"Call of Duty is bigger, and GTA will not maintain its position as the world's biggest mainstream franchise,"
Judging by the sales figures, that is indeed true, as GTA IV has shipped in excess of 22 million copies, while Black Ops, the latest game in the Call of Duty series has sold somewhere in the vicinity of 25 million copies. However, one must also remember that GTA IV was released back in 2008, when the console installation base was much smaller than it is now and most consumers tend to stay away from older games, regardless of their quality.
That wasn't the end of Pachter's statements, as he also said a small piece about the longevity of each of the series'.
"Eventually, Call of Duty may suffer from fatigue, and GTA could keep chugging along, but it will be 8 years before we can make that call,"
Okay then.
