Forums - Gaming Discussion - Pachter: Call of Duty Bigger Than Grand Theft Auto

VelocityGamer

In news that will shock no-one, Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter has once again made a statement that most gamers could have made a year ago. Okay, that's being a bit harsh on the man, it is his job after all. This time, his statements were made to IndustryGamers and pertained to two of the largest video game franchises in history, Grand Theft Auto and Call of Duty:

"Call of Duty is bigger, and GTA will not maintain its position as the world's biggest mainstream franchise,"

Judging by the sales figures, that is indeed true, as GTA IV has shipped in excess of 22 million copies, while Black Ops, the latest game in the Call of Duty series has sold somewhere in the vicinity of 25 million copies. However, one must also remember that GTA IV was released back in 2008, when the console installation base was much smaller than it is now and most consumers tend to stay away from older games, regardless of their quality.

That wasn't the end of Pachter's statements, as he also said a small piece about the longevity of each of the series'.

"Eventually, Call of Duty may suffer from fatigue, and GTA could keep chugging along, but it will be 8 years before we can make that call,"

Okay then.

let's wait till the next gta to decide which one sells more! remember when gta came out' all console's had a lower install base and it outsold cod

Can't judge right now, but I think if GTAIV can reach 22 mill, it can surpass 25 mill with all the new consoles out there. The install base has gone up more than 75 million since then.

GTA still has the most universal appeal and COD online is getting more and more complicated each year that i believe may lose alot of its causal gamers because the shear amount of information when it comes to unlocks is huge. I was overwhelmed despite used to it when i got mw2 and black ops, and i think its a bit too much when you have to spend the equivalent of a game going though the unlocks to get rid of the "NEW' title next to them.

Anyways, if the next gta is like the two classics which is vice city and San Andrea's then it will sell 30 million units. They should also make it an entire new setting, tho a HD remake of San Andreas with just as classic story campaign and the removal of all the gritty from GTA4 would most likely sell more.

Of Course That's Just My Opinion, I Could Be Wrong

CoD sells 20 Million units Yearly

CoD, is unfortunately, bigger.

@Seece
That 22 Million of GTA4 includes the Episodes, doesn't it?

Biggest mainstream franchises? Really?

Mario Kart Wii (28.31 millions sold) says hello!

Mario Kart Wii released April 2008.

3 and a half years ago.

In that time COD has sold over 64 million units.

and if mario kart released 3 games with minor updates it would do the same, u cant compare a game with 1 release to multiple releases

GTA V could outsell the latest COD on PS360. GTA IV released in the middle of the year when the install bases were pretty low. It managed to beat MW1 & WAW. MW2 & BO beat it though, but one could blame that on the huge install bases that those games had. We'll have to see what GTA V does when it releases.

No I don't think it does.
