It's rather unlikely really. Just take this generation as example. There have so far been sold 180 million Mario games in the 7th gen. If you look at publishers, how many have even sold 180 million copies in total this generation? (Since 2006)
Nintendo, obviously, with 607 million copies sold. Other than them, here's some of the biggest.
Electronic Arts: 330 million
Activision: 248 million
Ubisoft: 174 million
Sony: 142 million
Take-Two: 123 million
Microsoft: 90 million
If you take every single franchise these companies sell, and add them together, only two companies beat the sales of Mario. I honestly don't see anyone - except for possibly Electronic Arts - coming anywhere near selling the amount of software Nintendo does now. And Electronic Arts is a company with tons of small franchises, not few large ones like Nintendo.
The only company that can make an IP that will topple current-Mario in the forseeable future is Nintendo. It's possible that they will, but I doubt it, as they don't really have much of an insentive to.
