Forums - Website Topics - The forums are stagnating - what should be done about it?

Bring back VGchartz 2.0000000 :(

While the site overhaul brought many nice things, parts of it are a bit too split up and simple things require far too much time.

And snuggle the girls be they short or tall,
Then follow young Mat whenever he calls,
To dance with Jak o' the Shadows."

When I feel like reading/posting about video games, neogaf is a better forum in terms of layout, users, and moderation.

edit: also makingmusic makes long posts that could be summarized in one paragraph.

I went to NeoGaf to see what all the fuss was about. Everything is lumped into one section. Am I doing something wrong. Only threads from the last 10min are on the front page. That can't be convenient. The number of members is overwhelming. I'm never going there again.

It's like that so the servers don't crash or something.

The popular topics are usually on the first page anyways.

Not to mention anyone browsing on the smartphone is probably overwhelmed. I stopped bothering trying to get on this site on my phone, it is too bloated for quick loading on 3G networks, it is hard to navigate on a small screen, and its not user-intuitive at all for touchscreen. Even if the full site doesn't have a mobile version, a mobile forum would be great. With smartphone browsing becoming popular I think people click away from the site when they browse to it on their phone since its hard to navigate.

Hi everybody, been more than a year since I posted. Expected not to again, but saw this topic and thought I'd explain what turned me off.

1. The new site layout is horrid, the ads are obtrusive and the forums are split into too many subforums. The OP is right about that.

2. The sales figures available like others said no longer are conducive to fun informed debate. This leads to the biggest issue.

3. The community has gotten mean, not sure how else to say it. As somebody who don't really hold a big allegiance to any console in the current gen,I felt more and more that any opinion that wasn't part of a certain console fans groupthink was viciously attacked without regard to merit. Even the greatest console in the world has flaws, can we not have civil discussion about it where everyone can enter open minded and respectful? This polarization really killed honest discussion and by doing so I believe alienated our more nuanced, intelligent, and long term membership.

One thing I think that really reflects the community shift to fanboyism and closed-mindedness is the sales discussion. When I joined people actually talked about games, how they were doing, what was going wrong, and if they were making money in the end. Now the sales discussions are almost totally limited to the big AAA releases and the console wars. I really miss analyzing games from the niche on up,I remember people trying to figure out what went wrong with Cursed Mountain, or why Silent Hill Shattered Memories wasn't a better seller. The consoles are a fun horserace, but its the games that run on them that I am more interested in better understanding.

The community and topics are shit. Sure I can say it more politely but I won't. The bigger a site gets the shittier the community gets, it's fact. In 08 the site was usable and had a an good sized community that was active. Once 2.0 launched the site tried to do too much a ton of new people (idiots) came and a lot of the old users left or were banned due to site sensitivity. 3.0 somewhat cleaned up the mess that was 2.0 but nobody is left minus a few ancient useres.

The large Nintendo fanbase left, more Sony fans came and just general idiocy spread through out. A lot of these new topics are stupid and bias as hell. The users are stupid and the forums reflect that.

I don't like the new site layout. The forum buddy is half invisible and its too complicated to find stuff. The front page is filled with too many stuff.
