Forums - Gaming Discussion - Nintendo Wii U not a threat that requires PS4, says Tretton

I wouldn't be threated with the DS U either.

Above: still the best game of the year.

With what Nintendo has shown so far I can see why there is no hurry on the part of Sony or Microsoft. I wouldn't be surprised if we didn't see next gen consoles from them until 4 or 5 years if this is all Nintendo has to offer.

For once I agree (somewhat) with Tretton and in fact have been saying this for a while. The Wii U does not necessarily start a new console generation. It's just this gen part II for Nintendo, similarly Kinect/Move was this gen part II for Sony/MS.

If the Wii U tablet really takes off (unlikely) Sony / MS will just copy that. No need for new consoles - yet.

I also don't think prettier graphics are going to win anything for anyone going into a new gen. No matter how much more powerful the only significant difference will be true 1080p (which Wii U has and we don't care). Better lighting, more background details, more lifelike hair/clothes - who cares really?

The real threat to Sony/MS is cloud gaming and how 3rd parties would run to embrace that (one system - all homes!). Apple's icloud could be very threatening if Apple decides to enter the home gaming market (moreso than it is with tablets).

The intransigence of America's big broadband companies are the big three's saviors in that respect. So long as AT&T can feed you 512 kbps and call it "broadband," nobody's doing shit of any importance for the mass market in the cloud for a while. Though Google's getting their feet wet in the ISP department, so perhaps we'll reach a new era of broadband availability in this country soon (i can only hope so. Being more or less monopolized by Verizon, Time Warner, fucking Comcast, and AT&T has stagnated internet in this country tremendously)

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

I gotta be honest I think he's right. And I rarely ever agree with Sony PR but Nintendo showed nothing at E3 that honestly was a threat to either Sony or MS.

Now if Nintendo had come on stage showed gorgeous gameplay of online enabled games such as a Pokemon RPG with full online support and Smash Bros with matchmaking as well as 3rd party exclusive games then sure Sony and MS would start feeling the heat.

But going on stage and just showing Wii Sports type footage and New Super Mario Bros Mii along with a tech demo and a new controller with ZERO actual game announcements is far from threatening.

Don't get me wrong the Wii U may end up a serious danger to Sony and MS but as of now Nintendo showed nothing that would require them to believe they needed to rush out a new system.

I agree they have nothing to worry about, lucky for him, because that isn't the reason they're not launching the PS4 anytime soon, those masses losses incurred rolling that big old rock up that big old hill are, and no Jack you won't recoup that!

But maybe that`s better for Nintendo.
Had Nintendo showed everything or at least a big part of it`s plans, Sony and MS would have time to really speed up development if they saw Wii U as a threat because of that same revealing.
If Nintendo reveals it`s big guns at E3 next year and releases the console around September (release date announced prior to E3 2012) it will have more time in the market for itself.

That`s why i think Nintendo didn`t show pratically nothing. They know that they might get copied or that their plans might speed up Sony and MS`s development on new consoles.
More, their reveal, closer to a launch date, might cause more impact than having it revealed this year and launching next year - while very likely going through another E3!

apart from the bolded (LOLwut!?) he is right..it's the same for sony AND ms. They are both doing just fine now..2013 new consoles I think..no rush

I think there is some truth to this in that Nintendo probably only intended for the Wii U demonstration to be a "teaser", and a more completed demonstration of the Wii U at E3 2012 may be more "dangerous". But I also think there is a lot of truth to saying that Tretton is only spinning the announcement of the Wii U to put Sony in the best light; and they probably consider the Wii U to be a threat to what they're doing with the PS3 and PS4 (especially after the Wii).

I too believe it`s just another "spin". truth is, and he knows it, it`s that no matter how different Wii or Wii U might be, both are still after the same market. And how can it not be a threat if this time Nintendo is after the core gamers aswell (while still going after the casual market)? If Wii was considered old generation because of it`s power, so will Xbox 360 and PS3, when Wii U comes out.

Unfortunately these kind of comments only makes him look bad as it won`t change nothing. Gamers are the ones who will decide who´s side they are on.
