Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Wii U won't play GC games

Source: http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/08/wii-u-doesnt-play-gamecube-games/

Nintendo has confirmed that the WiiU's backwards compatability will not be expanded to the Gamecube.  I guess to a degree it can be seen as expected, but I would've quite liked the ability to play GC games on WiiU.

In this case, I'll guess I'll keep my Wii in the same way I kept my GBA SP so I could play my GB and GBC games.

That's stupid.

GameCube games will be available on virtual console

Nintendo Network ID: Sherlock99

Well, I'll keep my wii in that case, eventhough I rarely play my GC games anymore.. but you never know.

Not that surprising. Might just sell my wii and keep my gamecube, whenever I do choose to upgrade...it'll soften the blow of WiiU a little bit.

I seriously think people need to stop complaining when systems aren't 2 generations backwards compatible. Being compatible with the last generation i think is a fair industry standard for consumers to expect. Beyond that is just being a little goddamn pushy. You can go buy the 2 generation old console on ebay for 50 bucks at that point. Plus if you loved that system so much you may have decided to keep it.

I kinda figured as much when I heard that the GC ports weren't featured on the console shown.

Not a big deal for me since I don't plan on parting with my Wii.

it was a bit of a pipe dream to expect it would play the gamecube games as well, it seems that backwards compatibility only goes back a single generation

not that big of a deal keeping the wii. already keeping the wiimotes to use for the wii u

If you can emulate the Wii, you can emulate the Gamecube. Surely someone can make a hack to enable the backward compatibility.

In order to make it backwards compatible with GCN as well as Wii, they would have to incorporate GCN hardware into it as well as Wii. Multiple consoles' hardware is tedious and cramped.
