PS3 didn't fail to have the grunt. Sony took it out to continue selling PS2's. And it wasn't a cost-cutting measure at all. The Emotion Engine is cheap to make, they just took it off the PS3 mainboard to keep PS2 sales strong. And it is still selling decent. PS2 just had a hardware revision like last year...put the power supply on the console instead of the brick.

NGP is 2 generations away from PS2. I think they will honestly.

It was most certainly a cost cutting measure. Maybe they also wanted to keep the PS2 going, but they certainly wanted to cut down on the PS3 cost too.

Emotion Engine added probably a few dollars to the PS3 production price. PS2 gets them $99 a sale. So it was probably a combination of "We can save a few bucks to get PS3 closer to profitablilty as well as keep PS2 sales (Our profit workhorse) going strong"

i hope not, i just want the ps2 to die already honestly

Agreed, though it was certainly more than just a few dollars in the big picture. The EE would be taking up space on the motherboard, making the MB bigger than it needed to be, and a development team would have to continuously update the emulator (it wasn't purely hardware emulated).

It would be a HUGE mistake to let pass an opportunity to keep selling old games. Do you imagine playing Devil May Cry on the go? I would probably buy Shadow of Colossus and MGS Collections for PS3 an if Sony could offer me to resume my game on the NGP for an extra 9.99$ I´ll go for it.

If we do see PS2 games on the store, they'll be ports that a compatible with both systems.

No, for two reasons.

The 3DS has released too early... and there is NO WAY, the NGP will get anywhere near selling 1 billion units of software.

But PS2 games...I'm not quite sure. I think so.

Leatherhat on July 6th, 2012 3pm. Vita sales:"3 mil for COD 2 mil for AC. Maybe more. "  thehusbo on July 6th, 2012 5pm. Vita sales:"5 mil for COD 2.2 mil for AC."

Yes lol.

20GB motherboard, EE GS in bottom left. That's a TON of big chips on it.

Without it.

Cooling the beast!

I'm not arguing that it's a really small part of the overall system, I'm just saying the EE takes up unnecessary space, which is cumbersome when components need to be shrinked for example. By completely removing it, Sony were better able to make other cost saving measures.

No I was showing that it let them shrink the motherboard, which is good. The pic of the cooling system was extra, to show that Sony took cooling seriously the first time around unlike Microsoft.
