It is this mentality that has me worried about its sales.

It needs to be rebranded as FFXV or it will forever remain a spin off in the eyes of people, and with XIII-2 coming people are going to get so confused between all these XIII's.

And SE will do that, as they did for Type-0, I am sure of it.

That's a very good point , but SE can't just change the genre of well established franchise like FF , Versus is Nomura vision and what he wanted for the series , an ActionRPG , a daring way to make a FF game , but can never be a mainline FF .

Final Fantasy XIII-2 is the sequel to Final Fantasy XIII. Final Fantasy Versus XIII, on the other hand, is a spin-off of the series.

All of those games are considered part of the Fabula Nova Crystallis series.

Edit: Just to be more clear. 4 games are developed under the Fabula Nova Crystallis: Final Fantasy series.
- Final Fantasy XIII and its sequel, XIII-2.
- Final Fantasy Versus XIII
- Final Fantasy Type-0 (used to be called Agito XIII)

And why is the hype so big towards Versus but not so much to Typo-0 and  XIII-2? Is it because it's Sony exclusive?

Because XIII-2 is the sequel to a game that was controversial (people who loved XIII are very hyped for it like me, people who didn't aren't hyped for it but some of them are for some odd reason) and we know nothing much about it right now.

Type-0...god knows why. It has EVERYTHING gameplay wise FF fans have wanted since FF9...its not hyped as its on a portable is my guess.

Versus is hyped as it looks very promising in every way and is PS3 exclusive so will push the system to the absolute limits like FF9 did to PS1 and FF12 did to PS2.
