Yep, that's why the only console sitting in my living room right now is a Playstation 3.

While I dont blame the hackers for this crap, although someone obviously got into Sony's servers and took some information.  I am not going to blame Geohot and all those other morons for this.

But what i dont get is placing the blame squarely on Sony for this. Sure there security wasnt the greatest and should have been better for the PSN servers.  But they werent the ones who broke into it and took information.   It would be like blaming a bank for a robbery that happened on a their vault that wasnt completely secure and ignoring the robbers who actually did it. Just because it wasnt completely secure doesnt make it right that they did this. In the end its still the fault of the hacker who broke into the PSN service and took information that wasnt his.

Is that this security breach was a server-side flaw. "Hacking" a PS3 shouldn't give anyone access to critical PSN information any more than hacking a computer or install of Firefox would give you access to Amazon's customer database.

The tools to defend against this type of attack have been available for years. I can build a secure e-commerce store in a matter of hours and get it locked down to prevent this type of information breach using off-the-shelf software. Why can't Sony do the same on their PROPRIETARY system?

No matter whether you think Sony was in the right over the Geohotz fiasco, they royally screwed the pooch on this one.

And that is no one's fault but their own. They deserve every bit of bad press they're going to get over this.

Can you do it on a massive amount of worldwide servers that were built half a decade ago? Didn't think so, and I'm pretty sure whoever got into psn could easily get past whatever defences you can make

Well, I certainly hope Sony has more than one person manning their security department.

It takes time to do it on a massive network like this, and you have to take it down to do it, so basically if Sony did upgrade it earlier it would have been taken down anyways, and people would be complaining about them taking it down for no reason, and there haven't been problems till recently so there wasn't a real need, so yeah, and cheaters and pirates are abundant on live, so they aren't any better I just don't get what you want, actually I do you want to eat your cake and have it too, and that just can't happen

If the security hole wasn't there, they wouldn't have to take down the network at all. Ever heard of cloud servers? They're built just for this kind of work. Scale up, offload repairs, shut down part of the network, and upgrade, rotate to the next batch of servers. Networks do it all the time and the end user is never the wiser.

It is Sony's job to take their customers' faith in their network seriously and prevent this from happening in the first place. The guy who did it is certainly a dick but if someone steals from my bank, I'm going to blame the bank if it comes back to me. It's part of the promise they made to me by taking my money and keeping it "safe".

seems to be far less embarrasing than Xbox RROD

OT: Why do fanboys feel the need to create threads to bash their competitors? Do u feel personally affected by the well being of your console of choice?

As Hatmoza said "You hate Sony, we get it."

Did you just call me a fanboy? Really? I don't even own a 360 or Wii right now.

I guess it hurts some peoples' feelings if you place blame on their beloved company, even if that company did completely fuck over their customer base.

Oh, and I took Microsoft to task for the RRoD clusterfuck back in 2007. But I guess that doesn't fit into your narrow view of fanboydom, does it?

No wonder you hate Sony so much.

These are the same people who had the idea of using a rootkit as DRM for music. Imagine that meeting:

-We need a way to not get our CDs copied

-Let's use this software, though it basically acts as malware and leaves a gaping hole in a person's system

-Should be fine let's roll it out

Given what they pulled with that a few years ago, this scenario is actually kind of hilarious.

One of the most hilarious things about this site is that it's impossible for anyone to present an honest criticism of anything in the gaming industry without being accused of having an agenda and only making their post to start a flame war. Perhaps people with a certain kind of mindset assume that everyone else has the same mindset; they can't believe anyone would have any other motive for saying anything.

I don't see anything other than an honest and legitimate criticism here, and this is coming from someone who has bought every Sony console ever made, and owns neither an Xbox 360 nor a Wii. Don't think you can avoid discussion of the fact that it is Sony's responsibility to keep this information safe by accusing people of trolling or by pulling out the old tu quoque argument.

Sony done goofed, and consequences will never be the same

To think this all started with some Custom Firmware...

Who would've thought CFW would result into PSN data being compromised? :P
