Forums - Sony Discussion - Should Sony convince Developers to stop making games for the ps2?

Sony are not gonna do that. But I feel we'l start to see a change in policy from Sony in the 2nd half of next year. When there's another price drop and the blockbuster games are arriving.

All consoles have games.  Its why they exist.  Careful.

The question itself is faulty. The question should be should Sony convince developers stop making games for PS2 in favor for PS3. Then i would say yes. I think Sony shouldn't put 1st party support on PS2, they need to focus solely to PS3, in order to boost sales, but third parties are different. Since 3rd parties get no gain from Playstation brand, there's no reason for them to stick with Sony.
If Sony would convince 3rd parties to drop PS2 support, the developers would propably go to Nintendo. The reason for PS2:s current support, is comparatively low development costs and high installbase, that's what interests the developers. Some of the developers can't even afford more expensive development.
So, if the PS2 support would be dropped, developers would go to Wii or perhaps even 360, because of the lower development costs and higher installbase. PS3 would benefit less than it's competition from it, and it would hurt Sony/it's gaming division in general, by losing revenue.
Besides, PS2 is slowly dying, while it still is alive and well anyway, and a lot of PS2 sales is rebuys for broken consoles and late adopters, who are interested in PS2:s library in general, and the used games market, more than new games on the platform.

The only way for Sony to get the 3rd parties to drop PS2 in favor for PS3 would be offering them money, and i'm not in the mood for going into too deep in this one.

If the only way to continue enjoying your PS2 library if/when the machine stopped working was a PS3, I think that would be good motivation to buy a PS3  for some of the people on the fence.

Its not gonna happen for 3 more years, unless sony doesn't make good on their 10 year plan, but I bet they will.
