It's getting easier and easier to win an argument around here.

I never even finished Metroid Prime 3. It got too boring because there just wasn't that story driven factor. The same with Zelda, and any Mario game. I might just rent Metroid Other M used and try it out. If you dislike it for its cutscene fashion, then it might just be a good game.

Your right about online games, but i don't see that as a bad thing. Online games add incentive to play the game over and over again because of leaderboards and friends over a headset. And while the Cod games are short, they are still fun and get the job done for anyone that wants to play them.

Why would you need a story to enjoy a game?

....And which Zelda did you even play? They're all strongly story-driven, just in various ways.

I don't need a story to play a game. But i rarely beat a game that is not story driven. I just do not care about the characters and would rather play a game that has a story. Games can have an amazing story and gameply and thats what i would rather play. If there is a Zelda that is story driven please lead me to it. The only one i finished was A link to the past because the gameplay was so much fun and the magic was excellent, unline any other Zeldas. I got bored of twilight princess because i don't care about link. I don't know him, or Zelda. Like why would i care about finishing the game? Link has no personality, and its not fun playing as him, and Ganadorf is just Evil for no reason all time. The game is great ofcourse, but i wouldn't call it story driven. I finished Darksiders over Zelda. I wanted to know who caused the apacolypes, and who ho betrayed War? infamous, thats story driven. God of War III, story driven. Prince of Persia, story driven. I could go all day.

I agree. Gaming is far inferior today than it was in the 80s/90s. The reason being is the industry is trying more and more to make games "epic" in terms of cutscenes, graphics, etc. They are pulling out all the stops trying to make their games more like action movies. The problem with that is, it usually comes at the cost of the actual GAMEPLAY, and the freedom of choice within games. Try playing a modern game and see how far you can wander off from the main mission/quest. Chances are you'll be stopped by invisible walls. That's because modern games require so much power, and thus there is no room left to make an open world. (There are of course exceptions to this, like Fallout 3 and Oblivion, which is why these are some of the few HD games I like).

Overall, you get these very limited games that sacrifice freedom, and the randomizing elements that make games special, for the sake of extra polygons, cutscenes, etc. Games today just feel like they hold your hand, and are more like interactive movies, as you are merely there to "play out" what the developer has already laid out in front of you. You know longer feel like YOU'RE the hero. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind story in my games. I just prefer that I am the one who creates my own story. Some backstory is ok, but I don't like it imposed too much upon me. People just want to feel in maximum control of their game, and more and more, games seem to be taking control out of the hands of the player, and towards the developer. Now I LOVE rich and engrossing epic movies, but I don't like them mixed with my games. I either like to sit back and be taken away in an epic film, OR play an action packed game in which I am in complete control. I don't like a combination of the two. And I think many people are in the same boat.

This is why the industry is losing consumers, and why you see SO many people talking about the "good old days." Of gaming. I went on a simple youtube video that simply had music from DKC, and scrolling through the comments section, there were DOZENS of people complaining about modern gaming, and how they wished games were still "like this." Clearly, something drastic has changed to deter this large base of oldschool gamers.

Excellent post.

Pixel Art can be fun.

But all the games you've named, except for Mario, are pretty story driven. Each of them tells you where you need to go and why (especially Corruption, which is very dynamic). Link's character isn't what's important here - you're supposed to care about the people around you, the citizens of Ordon, and how you interact with them. You're defined by your relationship to them, rathher than anything Link says, which is a relatively novel way of doing things in the context of today's game market. Samus is characterized in much the same way.

There's no way you got that far into Twilight Princess; Ganondorf isn't mentioned until a good chunk of the way through the game, and doesn't actually appear until the very very very end.

If you want a lot of characterization and whatnot, try Wind Waker.

Are you one of those people who will try to tell me with a straight face that Darksiders is superior to Zelda?

Where did replayability go? Shot in the head in a basement in Yekaterinberg, unless you want to frag people online...

Strange that you say that city. One of my best friends is from there :D

Thats the thing, i don't know why ganandorf is evil, and your right i didn't really see him all that much. I got up to the part with the three mirrors. I stopped at the first mirror. And i saw my friend beat the last dungeon (SPOILERS*the final boss battle was really good, not ganon, but the horse ride). You don't interact with the citizens around you, and your not playing as them. The only time when i actually cared about saving anyone was in the town where you had to save the children and there was fire that you had to get around in wolf form (sorry my memory is meh). Because i actually spent some good time with them, they are your friends, and they matter.

The whole time you are asked to save Hyrule/Twilight with the help of these Gods(Shiny lights) and i just didn't care about it. I think that Link should have more personality, or maybe give ganandorf a better back story. Why is he evil? Why does he hide in a dungeon while link gets stronger? There is no emotion, no impact of killing ganadorf ( when you do). And i never said that Darksiders is superior to Zelda. Its pretty close though. And i would pick it over Zelda any day. (I should try out windwaker though when i have the time). If you haven't played Darksiders you should. It lacks in presentation, but the gameplay and the story are there.

You can't pass comment on the way the story is built when you've seen less than 10% of it. If you only got the first mirror shard, then you barely saw any of the game at all. Your judgment concerning impact and emotion is necessarily hindered.

I own Darksiders, and I can't think of a single respect in which I prefer it to Zelda.

I finished like 4-5 dungeons. If i finish 4-5 dungeons in game, and it hasn't pulled me in. There is a problem with the story telling.

Edit: maybe you misunderstood where i was in the game.

Ah, right, Mirror Shard. That would be after Stallord, then. Never mind.

Tell you what

Don't bother with Wind Waker

Windwaker has always interested me because of the art style ofcourse. I don't even know if ill ever to get play it, none of my friends own it lol. You should seriously play infamous though. I want you to tear that game to shreds so we could really get into some debate xD
